Job Summary: The Cost Accountant is accountable for the ongoing gross margin analysis related to inventory and presents this information to management to aid in determining profit and loss. This position will include monitoring inventory accuracy, maintaining cost systems, analyzing variances, creating reports, recommending customer pricing, forecasting, and completing month-end duties to properly record costs on profit and loss statements per generally accepted accounting principles. They will use their findings to make suggestions for improvement regarding cost and operational efficiencies. Essential Job Functions:

Implements and advises other departments on the process of inventory item setups, production process setups, and build of materials setups in the Plex system.

Investigates cycle counting variances, scrap adjustments, manufacturing variances, and other miscellaneous inventory adjustments on a daily and weekly basis. Reports and communicates to operational departments the proper procedures and solutions to resolve any issues.
Determines item standard costs by studying and collecting data on costs associated with labor, raw materials, and other manufacturing activities. Maintains accurate standard item cost structures in the Plex system and reviews standard versus actual costs for inaccuracies.
Creates costing models for customer pricing and plays a key role in helping set pricing policies to maximize profit while still selling at a fair price to customers.
Creates detailed reports including monthly gross margin analysis by customer item with documented explanations of findings when compared to the budget plan and prior year.
Validates the cost of goods sold and inventory balance sheet accounts as part of the month-end close including the recording of necessary reconciling adjustment journal entries.
Makes recommendations and records journal entries for inventory adjustments and reserves.
Accumulates and applies overhead costs as required by generally accepted accounting principles.
Reviews Build of Materials (BOMs) and recommends changes to the Quality and R&D departments.
Prepares forecasts of inventory turns utilizing sales and production information.
Takes part in inventory cycle counts to ensure the accuracy of inventory records and assists with company annual year-end physical count that takes place the last week of December each year.

Analyzes capital budgeting requests related to manufacturing.
Compiles necessary expense analysis for operational department managers and improves the budgeting process through education of managers on financial issues impacting their budgets.
Updates financial forecasts for revenue and cost of goods sold.
Compiles and prepares the annual budget to be uploaded into the ERP system.
Prepares and communicates financial metrics to management team. Explains variances to budget and prior year to help managers understand if the overall profit and loss statement is on track to planned budget.
Investigates and updates ERP system processes related to production and inventory transactions that affect costing on the general ledger reporting.
Prepares ad hoc reporting related to sales, forecasting, and costing.

Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
5+ years of accounting/finance experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Excellent analytical and judgement skills.
Superior knowledge of ERP systems and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software as required to complete and maintain records.
Good written and verbal communication skills to convey and receive information effectively in person, on the phone, or through written correspondence.
Excellent organizational skills to work independently, prioritize, handle multiple tasks and manage time.
Leadership skills including decision-making, coaching, teaching and counseling, ability to inspire, and initiating collaboration and teamwork within the organization.
Excellent understanding of manufacturing and “big picture” operational concepts.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

Provide necessary papers allowing holder to work legally in the United States.
