POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Vice President of Finance & CFO, the Controller provides leadership and oversight of financial reporting, general accounting, patient financial services, admitting, revenue integrity, and internal financial controls, ensuring financial integrity, regulatory compliance, and operational effectiveness.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supports the Mission and Vision of RML Specialty Hospital by demonstrating RML’s Values of Service, Teamwork, Accountability, Integrity, Respect and Stewardship (STAIRS) in all actions. Promotes positive customer experience in all interactions with patients, families and co-workers.
- Financial Reporting & Accounting: Directs General Accounting and financial reporting, ensuring timely, accurate, and GAAP-compliant financial statements and reporting. Leads the annual external audit in collaboration with the Vice President of Finance & CFO.
- Accounts Payable & Payroll: Oversees Accounts Payable and Payroll functions, ensuring accurate and timely payments, appropriate internal controls, and compliance with all applicable reporting requirements.
- Revenue Cycle & Patient Financial Services: Oversees Patient Financial Services and Admitting ensuring accurate and timely billing, collections, payments, insurance verification, and required reporting. Ensures accounts receivable is appropriately valued and reported.
- Revenue Integrity & Compliance: Oversees charge capture, Charge Description Master maintenance, charge audits, price transparency, and claim denials. Partners with Finance and Compliance leadership to identify, resolve, and mitigate billing, reimbursement, and compliance risks.
- Budgeting & Financial Planning: Leads the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Vice President of Finance & CFO, ensuring accurate financial projections aligned with organizational goals.
- Internal Controls & Regulatory Compliance: Develops and maintains financial policies, procedures, and internal controls that safeguard assets, ensure financial reporting integrity, and support compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including Medicare and Medicaid requirements.
- Financial Systems & Process Improvement: Oversees the integrity and effectiveness of financial systems and reporting applications. Drives process improvement through technology, automation, standardization, cross-training, and efficient workflows.
- External Relationships: Maintains effective relationships with regulatory agencies, government programs, payers, financial institutions, auditors, vendors, and healthcare organizations.
- Leadership & Staff Development: Leads, develops, and evaluates departmental staff; establishes performance expectations; and promotes accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Organizational & Strategic Leadership: Leads and participates in committees and organizational initiatives, provides financial expertise and recommendations to leadership, and advises the Vice President of Finance & CFO on significant financial, regulatory, reimbursement, and industry developments.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field; CPA required.
- 10–12 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, preferably in healthcare or public accounting with healthcare audit experience.
- 3–5 years of experience in a senior management, Director, Controller, or equivalent leadership role.
- Demonstrated experience with hospital accounting, financial reporting, revenue cycle, patient financial services, admitting, revenue integrity, and reimbursement.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, healthcare reimbursement, Medicare and Medicaid requirements, internal controls, and financial reporting.
- Experience leading annual budgeting and external audit processes.
- Experience with financial systems, software implementations, system upgrades, and reporting applications.
- Experience developing and implementing financial policies, internal controls, and process improvements.
- Hospital Controller experience strongly preferred.
- Master’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, or a related field preferred.

- Adaptability: Maintains current knowledge of healthcare regulations, accounting standards, reimbursement, and industry trends and adapts effectively to changing requirements.
