The Controller serves as the senior financial and operational infrastructure leader for Protech, partnering directly with the President/GM to drive financial performance, operational discipline, and scalable business processes across the organization. This is a highly hands-on, business-embedded role responsible not only for finance and accounting, but also for key operational functions including purchasing, inventory, and systems. The Controller plays a critical role in ensuring project profitability, improving cash flow, and building the infrastructure required to support continued growth. The Controller reports directly to the President/GM of Protech, to ensure alignment with enterprise standards, reporting, and controls.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic & Operational Leadership - Serve as a trusted partner to the President/GM, translating business strategy into financial plans, operating targets, and measurable performance outcomes - Drive financial visibility and accountability across the business, enabling informed decision-making at the executive and operational levels - Lead annual planning, budgeting, forecasting, and performance analysis processes Financial Performance & Construction Finance - Own financial performance across all business lines, with a strong focus on project profitability, margin improvement, productivity, and cost control - Oversee construction-specific financial processes including WIP reporting, job costing, backlog analysis, and margin fade/gain visibility - Partner closely with operations and project leadership to ensure accurate project setup, financial tracking, and proactive issue identification Revenue Cycle, Billing & Cash Flow - Lead and optimize billing processes across project, service, and T&M work, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with contract terms - Improve cash flow performance through disciplined management of billing, collections, retainage, and overall working capital - Drive accountability around cash conversion and invoice dispute management Accounting & Financial Operations - Ensure excellence in all core accounting functions, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and financial reporting - Deliver accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements - Maintain strong internal controls, compliance, and audit readiness Operational Infrastructure (Purchasing, Inventory & Systems) - Provide leadership and oversight of purchasing and inventory functions, driving cost discipline, material visibility, and working capital efficiency - Partner with operational leaders to improve procurement processes, vendor management, and inventory controls - Oversee local IT infrastructure and Protech specific software solutions; support uptime, data integrity, and process efficiency - Lead initiatives to standardize, simplify, and automate back-office operations Team Leadership & Development - Lead, mentor, and develop a multi-functional team across accounting, billing, collections, and operational support functions - Build a high-performance culture focused on accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence - Ensure the organization has the right talent, structure, and processes to support current operations and future growth External Relationships & Governance - Manage relationships with external tax support and authorities, auditors, bonding agents, and insurance providers - Ensure compliance with all financial, regulatory, and reporting requirements - Align with Crete United on financial reporting standards, policies, and best practices
Professional Experience & Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or MBA strongly preferred
- 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, preferably within construction, MEP, or project-based services - Demonstrated expertise in construction accounting, including WIP, job costing, and project financial management - Proven ability to lead and scale finance and operational support functions in a complex, multi-service organization - Experience overseeing or partnering closely with purchasing, inventory, or operational infrastructure functions preferred - Strong systems orientation, with experience improving ERP environments and financial reporting processes - Hands-on leadership style with the ability to operate effectively both strategically and tactically - Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence across all levels of the organization - Ability to work onsite in Corpus Christi, TX
