Construction Controller

The ideal candidate must have substantial construction accounting experience and direct, hands-on knowledge of Sage 100 Contractor, AIA progress billing, job costing, work-in-progress reporting, purchasing, and subcontractor cost management.
Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Construction Controller to lead our accounting, financial reporting, purchasing, and project-cost control functions. This leadership role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, overseeing construction billing, managing AP/purchasing operations, and providing reliable financial insights to ownership. This position directly oversees the Accounts Payable and Purchasing Coordinators and reviews labor-cost data for accurate job costing.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
- At least five years of progressive accounting experience
- Experience: Substantial background in construction accounting (Civil/Infrastructure preferred).
- Software Proficiency: Direct, hands-on knowledge of Sage 100 Contractor.
- Demonstrated experience with AIA G702 and G703 billing
- Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or Sr Construction Accounting professional
- Experience preparing and analyzing WIP schedules
- Knowledge of percentage-of-completion accounting, overbillings, underbilling’s, retainage, and revenue recognition
- Experience overseeing purchasing, purchase orders, accounts payable, and vendor management.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Accounting & Reporting
- GL & Financial Close: Oversee the general ledger and lead accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes.
- Financial Statements: Prepare and review income statements, balance sheets, cash-flow reports, and leadership dashboards.
- Reconciliations & Systems: Manage bank/credit card reconciliations, journal entries, and maintain the accounting structure within Sage 100 Contractor.
- Compliance: Ensure all financial activity aligns with GAAP and construction accounting best practices.
- Cost Tracking: Maintain precise job-cost records (labor, materials, equipment, subcontracts) and ensure correct project/phase allocation.
- WIP & Profitability Analysis: Prepare WIP schedules and analyze contract values, percentage of completion, earned revenue, and projected gross profits.
- Budget Monitoring: Compare actual costs against estimates, identify cost overruns or margin changes, and calculate over/under-billings.
- Project Collaboration: Partner with Project Managers and estimators to update forecasts and support financial project closeouts.
- Billing Lifecycle: Manage the full construction billing cycle for both public and private projects.
- AIA Applications: Prepare, review, and approve AIA G702 and G703 payment applications.
- Change Orders & Retainage: Incorporate approved change orders into billings and track retainage receivable to ensure timely collection.
