Controller – Commercial Construction
Do you like working with numbers? Do new challenges and projects excite you? Are you a self-starter who thrives in a high-energy team environment? We're partnering with an established general contractor, design-builder, and construction manager to appoint a full-time Controller out of their Oakville office.
Our client has spent close to two decades building a reputation for integrity and quality construction across the commercial construction market. Founded and still led by its original principals, the business is known for a genuine passion for craftsmanship and a relationship-driven approach to its projects and its people. Their philosophy is simple: hire great people, trust them to excel, and keep improving how results are delivered.
Reporting directly to the Chief Commercial Officer, you'll own the day-to-day accounting operations of the business, keeping financial reporting accurate, timely, and year-end ready. This is a hands-on seat for someone who likes to get into the detail — running the full accounting cycle, leading a small team, and partnering closely with leadership and external accountants.
Why This Opportunity Is Different
This isn't a Controller role buried in layers of corporate bureaucracy. You'll report directly to the CCO with real visibility into ownership decisions, lead a small and collaborative accounting team, and take on a genuine leadership mandate on the finance side of a new ERP implementation — a rare chance to help shape a system that will define how the business runs for years. The company's founder-led, two-decade track record offers the stability many growing construction firms can't match, paired with the autonomy and challenge of a business still actively evolving.
What You'll Be Doing
- Leading, developing, and growing a collaborative accounting team
- Owning the full accounting cycle: accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, fixed assets, and job/cost accounting
- Overseeing project accounting, including WIP reporting, job-cost analysis, holdbacks, progress billings, and revenue recognition
- Leading month-end close and producing accurate, timely financial statements and management reports
- Preparing and filing monthly HST and coordinating year-end working papers and corporate tax filings with external accountants
- Maintaining and strengthening documented accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Leading the annual budgeting process and maintaining rolling cash-flow and financial forecasts
- Overseeing the financial accuracy and reconciliation of payroll, partnering with HR
- Providing financial oversight of corporate insurance and fleet expenditures
- Providing financial analysis to support ownership on project performance, pricing, and purchasing decisions
- Leading the finance workstream for a new construction ERP implementation
- 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful experience in general contracting or construction management
- Post-secondary education in Accounting or Finance
- CPA designation strongly preferred; candidates without one may be considered with substantial hands-on Controller-level construction experience
- Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, and reviewing the work of accounting staff
- Strong Excel skills and comfort across the Microsoft Office suite
- Experience with construction or accounting software such as Premier, Procore, Jonas, CMiC, or Sage is an asset
- A clear communicator who can translate financial information into practical insights for ownership and operational leaders
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and calm under deadlines
- A self-starter with a collaborative, roll-up-your-sleeves attitude
Compensation is competitive and will be discussed during the screening process. A full benefits package is included. This is a full-time, salaried, on-site position.
