Scalzi is seeking a Controller, reporting to the Director of Finance.
This is a newly created role responsible for owning the full cycle of day-to-day accounting, leading month-end and year-end reporting, and implementing firm-wide policies related to cost controls, billing practices, and reconciliations. The Controller will manage a team of two bookkeepers and will play a key role in bringing structure and strong governance to areas of the business where established processes don’t yet exist.

1. Accounting Operations & Reporting
- Prepare and execute all accounting and financial reporting functions
- Lead and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
- Manage the full cycle of accounting, including accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Approve all bank reconciliations and credit card reconciliations
- Manage all prepaid accounts and post adjusting entries monthly
- Ensure all general and trust bank accounts are reconciled daily
2. Billing, Cash Management & Trust Accounting
- Manage the AR and billing process, including invoicing and collections
- Ensure all firm credit cards and lines of credit are managed and paid on time
- Responsible for issuing wires, EFTs, and cheques daily, and assisting with bank runs
- Ensure all trust requests are processed accurately and appropriately
- Prepare and file taxes, Law Society levies, and professional dues for the firm
3. Governance, Controls & Audit
- Develop and improve internal systems, controls, and reporting processes, including implementing reconciliations for cost control purposes
- Lead audits (compliance and annual) from start to finish
- Coordinate audits, tax filings, and compliance requirements
- Support strategic decision-making with accurate financial and operational data
4. Team Leadership
- Supervise and develop two direct reports (Bookkeepers), helping build a high-performance finance team
- Assist the Director of Finance with ad hoc reporting needs
First 90–120 Days - Key Contributions
- Own month-end reporting from end to end
- Implement reconciliations to strengthen cost controls
- Bring structure and consistency to the AR and billing process
Required Experience & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance
- 5+ years in a senior accounting role, with hands-on experience in month-end close and preparing monthly financial statements
- Accounting designation, or an equivalent combination of related experience
- Proven experience leading and running an audit from start to finish
- Hands-on experience with full-cycle AP, AR, and billing processes
- Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables
- Experience managing and leading a team from the ground up while working on day-to-day entries
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to manage both downward and upward
- Highly motivated and adaptable, comfortable in a fast-paced environment
- Legally eligible to work in Canada
The following experience/skills would be considered strong assets:
- Experience with Excel macros
- Experience with Clio and/or QuickBooks
- Law firm experience is not required. We are flexible to teach the firm-specific regulations and nature of the work
