We are seeking an experienced Construction Controller ro Sr. Accountant to lead the accounting and financial operations of a growing construction company in Solon, Ohio. Reporting directly to ownership, this individual will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the Company's financial reporting, construction accounting, payroll oversight, cash management, and compliance activities.
The Construction Controller will supervise two accounting/administrative employees who assist with accounting, payroll administration, human resources, and office operations. While support staff performs many day-to-day functions, the Controller will maintain overall responsibility for the accounting department and the accuracy of all financial information.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring both strategic oversight and active involvement in the accounting function.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all accounting and financial operations of the company.
- Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
- Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, and supporting schedules.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure the accuracy of all accounting records.
- Oversee construction accounting activities, including job costing, progress billing, retainage tracking, and project financial reporting.
- Monitor project profitability and provide financial analysis to ownership.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management functions.
- Establish and maintain effective accounting procedures and internal controls.
- Coordinate year-end financial reporting and tax preparation with the Company's external CPA firm.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting support staff.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting, payroll, tax, and regulatory requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of construction accounting experience.
- Experience with Foundation Software, Sage, Viewpoint, or other construction accounting software is required.
- Strong knowledge of job costing, AIA billing, retainage accounting, and percentage-of-completion accounting.
- Experience managing month-end and year-end close processes.
- Experience preparing financial statements and coordinating with external CPA firms.
- Experience overseeing payroll and payroll-related compliance.
- Strong Microsoft Excel and accounting systems experience.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in a hands-on environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supervising accounting staff or supporting an accounting department.
- Experience in a small to mid-sized privately held construction company.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
