Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in business administration/management, accounting or related field.
- Master’s Degree in Business Administration or CPA certification preferred.
- Minimum five years’ experience as a business manager or related role (preferred).
- Knowledge of current laws and regulations relating to public school accounting, including GASB.
- Evidence of school and/or business leadership experience (preferred).
- Excellent communication skills.
- Executive Core Qualifications, including the ability to lead change and lead people, the ability to meet to meet District goals with a focus on results, the possession of business acumen, and the ability to build collaborative teams.
- Demonstrated skills in computer technology and financial / HR computer software applications.
Position Expectations:
- Lead, plan, organize, and control all fiscal and business operations of a K-12 public school system. The District borders Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has 3,400 students, $53 million general operating revenue, 15% fund balance, $91 million total revenue, $122 million total assets, and $1.7 billion property valuations.
- Support and advise the Superintendent, Board of Education, administration, district staff, community, district suppliers, and colleagues in all areas relating to budget development, fiscal services, business operations, administrative services, payroll, contract administration, staff benefits, long-range financial planning, institutional knowledge, bond debt, and capital projects.
- Serve on the Superintendent’s Point Team (with Executive Director of Human Resources, Chief Academic Officer, and Principal for Operations), Board Finance Committee, Board Facility Committee and attends board meetings and any other committees, sub-committees, negotiations, or meetings as an advisor for all issues relating to the business, financial, and capital affairs of the district.
- Collaboratively identify, develop, plan, implement, and plan innovative procedures and solutions to support the educational process, but keep the district fiscally solvent, compliant, and in good financial standing.
- Responsible, ethical, and driven to always do the right things while also doing things right.
- Responsible for budget and long-range financial trend development.
- Advise on and evaluate financial parameters and priorities that are set by the Superintendent and the Board of Education.
- Prepare transparent, accurate, timely, and professional financial and business accounting and reporting, including Board reports, the Annual Financial Statements and Single Audits, and all reporting to State, Federal, and Local Agencies.
- Evaluate, advise, plan, and execute capital debt plan, capital infrastructure and bond projects.
- Serve as the District’s liaison and advocate, and in-district leader, for the joint risk management pool (MAISL), Michigan Schools 403b/457 Retirement Group (MSRG), and the Washtenaw County School Recycling Project and Waste Management Consortium.
- Work collaboratively with full-time and part-time fiscal services staff, as a leader, coach, mentor, problem-solver, manager, supervisor, and hands-on “doer.” Execute accurately and professionally all the financial, business, payroll, and employee benefit affairs of the school district within all laws, regulations, Board policies, contracts, and expectations.
- Work in a leadership role collaborating with and supporting the Director of Food & Nutrition and the Food Services Department.
- Become an expert in understanding and doing each task in the Business Office to be able to coach the staff, minimize risks, solve situations, evaluate results, identify and correct errors, and maintain consistency and continuity; and to be able to assist in the department tasks when needed.

School Finance & Program Accounting
- Student accounting and student funding

- Property tax levy administration and collection
- Debt management, including bond issuance, reporting, collections, and payments
- Unclaimed property reporting
Purchasing, Contracts & Vendor Management
- Purchasing procedures and resource development
- Competitive bidding processes and Requests for Proposals (RFPs)
- Vendor contract evaluation and administration
- Execution of financial agreements and benefit provisions within negotiated contracts
Payroll & Employee Benefits
- Payroll processing, paychecks, and employee withholdings
- Payroll taxes and required filings
- Staff benefits administration and reporting
- 403(b) and 457 retirement plan administration
Risk Management & Claims Administration
- Risk management programs and compliance
- Workers’ compensation claims management
- Unemployment claims management
Communication & Administrative Support
