Veterans Bridge Home (VBH) seeks an experienced strategic leader to serve as its next Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The ideal candidate will serve as a strategic partner to the Chief of Staff (COS) and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and as a key member of the executive leadership team. This role is responsible for guiding the organization's overall financial strategy and performance and overseeing all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, cash and treasury management, grant and restricted fund accounting, and the development and maintenance of robust financial systems. The CFO ensures full compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable funder and regulatory requirements while upholding the highest standards of accuracy and transparency in financial reporting. Additionally, the CFO leads the organization's risk management practices, implementing internal controls that safeguard assets, mitigate risk, and support sustainable growth. Through proactive leadership and analytical insight, the CFO plays a critical role in driving sound financial decision-making and supporting the long-term health of the organization.
Mission: Veterans Bridge Home connects, leads, and advocates in communities to ensure service members, veterans, and their families thrive.
Reporting Structure: The CFO reports directly to the Chief of Staff and serves as a member of the executive leadership team, leading the finance function, including the Accounting Manager.
Total Staff and Budget: 36 staff members, one direct report, and an annual budget of approximately $5 million.
Salary: The salary is commensurate with experience, and the salary range is $120,000 - $140,000.
Working Environment/Location: The CFO is based at VBH's headquarters in Charlotte, NC. Schedule and hybrid flexibility will be determined in conjunction with the Chief of Staff to best support the mission of the organization, with some travel to VBH's regional offices across North Carolina and South Carolina as needed.
Key Responsibilities of the Chief Financial Officer
Financial Planning, Reporting & Operations

• Own overall accountability for the monthly and year-end close process, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash/treasury management, delegating day-to-day execution to the Accounting Manager.
• Lead organization-wide budgeting and forecasting processes, partnering with department and program leaders on resource allocation and financial planning.
• Lead the development and execution of the organization's financial strategy, including multi-year financial planning, capital planning, and reserve and investment strategy.
• Evaluate and lead improvements to financial systems, technology, and processes to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability as the organization grows.

Grant Accounting & Compliance

• Set strategy and oversight for grant and restricted fund accounting, ensuring compliance and supporting development and grants teams with funder financial reporting.
• Maintain working knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, restricted funding, and financial compliance obligations across VBH's areas of responsibility.

Governance, Audit & Board Relations

• Present financial results, forecasts, and strategic recommendations to the Board of Directors and Finance/Audit Committee, and support board-level financial governance.
• Ensure organization-wide compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and audit readiness, and oversee the annual audit process.
• Develop, maintain, and periodically evolve financial policies, internal controls, and governance documentation.
• Participate in internal and external review processes related to audits, compliance, grants, and financial operations.

Risk Management & External Relations

• Establish and maintain enterprise risk management practices, including insurance, internal controls, and compliance across all funding sources.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors, banking partners, investment advisors, and key funders on financial and treasury matters.
• Represent VBH's financial interests in negotiations, banking relationships, and strategic partnerships.
• Partner with executive leadership in financial modeling for new programs, contracts, partnerships, and funding strategies.

Leadership & Team Management

• Serve as a strategic advisor to the COS, CEO, and Board of Directors on financial strategy, organizational sustainability, and long-range planning.
• Lead, mentor, and develop the Accounting Manager, building organizational capacity, succession planning, and a high-performing finance function.
• Identify, communicate, and address gaps in financial systems, workflows, and reporting practices across the organization.
• Communicate complex financial information clearly and effectively to non-financial executives, board members, staff, and other stakeholders.
• Foster a culture of financial transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement across the organization.
• Work with the COS, CEO, and Board to strengthen long-term financial sustainability, planning processes, and organizational resilience.
• Participate in and contribute to internal and external Veterans Bridge Home meetings, board sessions, and training as appropriate.
• Contribute to VBH culture through the embodiment of its values, the practice of self-reflection and self-leadership, and the offering of one's strengths to contribute to mission success.

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field. Active CPA preferred (CMA, MBA in Finance/Accounting, or comparable professional credential also considered).
• 10+ years of progressive finance and accounting leadership experience, including at least 5 years in a senior finance leadership role (CFO, VP of Finance, or Director of Finance) within a nonprofit organization, with direct oversight of finance staff and teams.
• Deep technical expertise in GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles, including grant accounting, restricted funds, month-end/year-end close, and audit readiness/preparation.
• Demonstrated experience presenting to and advising boards of directors and/or finance and audit committees.
• Proven track record leading financial strategy, multi-year forecasting, budgeting, and cash/treasury management for an organization with a multi-million-dollar, multi-funding-stream budget.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, financial modeling, dashboards) combined with hands-on experience using accounting software and reporting/dashboard tools.
• Exceptional ability to translate complex financial information into clear, strategic guidance for executive leadership, board members, and other stakeholders.
• Demonstrated experience building, developing, and leading finance teams.
• Experience with capital campaigns, investment and reserve policy management, ERP/accounting system implementations, or major finance technology transformations preferred.
• Experience in veteran services, social services, or related nonprofit sectors preferred.
