Position Summary:
Revolution Space is seeking an Assistant Controller to take ownership of the accounting function's day-to-day operations and serve as the primary technical accounting resource below the Director of Finance & Operations. This role reports directly to the Director of Finance & Operations and manages an Accounting Manager and other accounting personnel.
We are looking for a strong technical accountant with depth in revenue recognition and inventory and cost accounting in a hardware manufacturing environment. This individual will own the monthly close, lead the annual GAAP financial statement audit, and serve as a key accounting contributor to an upcoming ERP implementation.
This role carries real ownership from day one and the opportunity to shape how the function operates as the company scales.
Responsibilities:
Financial Close & General Accounting
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, including journal entry review, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
- Maintain general ledger integrity, reviewing and approving all journal entries prior to posting
- Own the fixed asset subledger, capitalization policy, and depreciation methodology
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable subledger governance, and serve as an authorized approver on outbound wire transfers
- Lead the annual GAAP financial statement audit from start to finish, including auditor relationship management, schedule preparation, and resolution of findings
- Maintain year-round audit readiness and prepare technical accounting memoranda for complex or judgmental positions
- Build and maintain the company's accounting policy manual, internal controls framework, and process documentation
Revenue Recognition & Contract Accounting
- Own revenue recognition under ASC 606 across various government contract types, with an emphasis on fixed-price contracts, including contract modifications, variable consideration, and performance obligation analysis
- Partner with program controls on EAC/ETC review and sign off on contract margin positions
- Maintain compliance with FAR cost principles applicable to revenue and billing
Inventory & Cost Accounting
- Own cost accounting for production costing, including absorption costing, overhead rate application, and WIP close
- Maintain MMAS-compliant costing systems and partner with manufacturing operations on BOM accuracy and cost roll-up integrity
- Serve as the primary accounting point of contact for DCAA floor checks and cost-related audit inquiries
Accounting Systems & Process Improvement
- Serve as a key accounting contributor to an ERP implementation, providing input on chart of accounts design, cost pool structure, and user acceptance testing
- Proactively identify opportunities to streamline and automate accounting workflows, and lead implementation of system-based improvements
Team Leadership
- Lead and develop the Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, and Cost Accountant, providing technical direction, workload oversight, and mentorship
- Partner with program management, contracts administration, and the Director of Finance on contract-level financial reporting matters
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA or CMA designation obtained (active licensure not required)
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong technical accounting background with demonstrated depth in revenue recognition (ASC 606) and inventory/cost accounting in a manufacturing environment
- Track record of owning a GAAP financial statement audit from start to finish
- Advanced Excel skills
- Experience with a modern ERP system
- A self-starter who takes full ownership of outcomes and is comfortable operating with significant autonomy in a lean, fast-moving team
- U.S. person status required; must be eligible to obtain a U.S. government security clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- 15+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Experience in a venture-backed or PE-backed defense, aerospace, or space company
- Public accounting background with government contractor or aerospace clients
- Familiarity with FAR, CAS, and DCAA audit processes
- Experience with stock-based compensation accounting (ASC 718)
- Experience with lease accounting (ASC 842)
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or Deltek Costpoint
- Familiarity with Power Query or other data automation tools
