Overview

Reporting directly to Yale Medicine Chief Financial Officer (YM CFO), the Senior Director, Associate Chief Financial Officer supports the YM CFO in overseeing the financial operations of the organization. This role is responsible for leading and overseeing long-range financial planning financial planning and analysis, forecasting, and providing decision support across a complex academic clinical enterprise. This position is responsible for leading YM FP&A including all clinical budgeting and funds flow responsibilities. Advises CFO, CEO, and department chairs on physician economics and financial performance drivers.  Translates complex financial results into clear actionable insights for executive decision-making. Leads financial reporting, risk assessment, and performance monitoring across clinical operations. Manages and develops a high-performing finance team with a focus on judgement, clarity, and impact. The Senior Director, Associate CFO works closely with executive leadership including with the YM CEO and Deputy Dean for Finance and Administration, clinical departments, and operational teams to ensure financial sustainability while supporting high-quality patient care. This role may serve as a delegate for the YM CFO on committees and taskforces.

This leadership role is expected to be primarily onsite to effectively support team collaboration, culture, and operational leadership.

Required Skills and Abilities

1.Comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles, investment, and fund accounting. Advanced knowledge of and experience with financial operations and analysis; audits, budgeting, forecasting, and modeling. Advanced knowledge of fiscal and regulatory compliance issues.
2.Knowledge of healthcare provider or health plan accounting/finance. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills.
3.Well-developed managerial, decision-making, planning, organizational, problem resolution and leadership skills. Strong ability to lead, train and motivate staff and organize effective task forces and project teams.
4.Passion for leading in a challenging and changing environment, utilizing innovation, technology, and best practices. Proactively shares knowledge and best practices with others.

Principal Responsibilities

1.    In partnership with the YM CFO, preparing annual and long-term revenue and expense budgets for Yale Medicine. Monitors budget to actual performance and proactively recommend interventions to YM CEO and Deputy Dean for F&A as needed. 
2.    Assist the CFO in developing and executing the organization’s financial strategy and long-term financial planning, including the effect of the funds flow arrangement with YSM’s partner, Yale New Haven Health System.
3.    Effectively leads direct reports, providing coaching and accountability. Mentor and develop finance staff to build strong financial leadership within the organization.
4.    Provide financial recommendations to executive leadership on operational and strategic initiatives, including modeling effects of new initiatives.
5.    Support financial modeling and analysis for service line growth, capital investments, and strategic partnerships.
6.    Lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing financial forecasting.
7.    Monitor departmental budgets and analyze variances, communicating proactively to YM CFO.
8.    Provide recommendations to improve financial performance and cost efficiency in a timely way.
9.    Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
10.    Analyze financial trends, key performance indicators (KPIs), and operational metrics.
11.    Provides financial reports and insights to executive leadership and the YM board.
12.    Ensure compliance with healthcare financial regulations and reporting standards.
13.    Partner with clinical and operational leaders to improve financial performance.
14.    Evaluate financial impact of new clinical programs and services.
15.    Support data-driven decision making across the organization
16.    Participates in overall risk management of the practice. 

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, healthcare administration, or related field required, with a minimum of 12 years’ experience in a multi-specialty medical academic setting. Master’s degree (MBA, MHA, or MS Finance) preferred.
