Assistant Controller Western Region
We are looking for an experienced Assistant Controller to join our Corporate Accounting team in Surrey, British Columbia. Reporting to the Western Regional Controller, you will oversee the financial administration of assigned divisions and operations across Western Canada and serve as a trusted, dependable right-hand partner to the Controller. This is a hands-on business-partnering role that requires you to learn how the operations work, build trusted relationships with operational leaders, and spend regular time in the field at assigned sites. You will translate financial information into practical business insights, identify opportunities to automate and streamline processes, and help strengthen the efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of the finance function. You will also lead month-end reporting, reconciliations, financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, audit support, special projects, and a finance team of approximately five to seven employees.
Key Responsibilities
· Lead and coordinate the financial administration of assigned divisions and operations.
· Prepare timely monthly financial statements, variance analysis, and commentary for senior leadership and Corporate Accounting.
· Manage month-end close activities, including balance sheet and intercompany reconciliations, bank reporting, and supporting schedules.
· Maintain accurate accounting records in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and develop production, statistical, and financial reporting tools in Excel.
· Evaluate and implement automation tools, system capabilities, and standardized workflows to reduce manual effort, eliminate duplication, strengthen controls, and improve the speed and accuracy of financial processes and reporting.
· Serve as the Controller’s trusted right-hand partner by anticipating needs, helping manage priorities, resolving issues, supporting key decisions, and providing reliable leadership coverage when required.
· Support annual audits, budgets, forecasts, strategic initiatives, and special projects in close partnership with the Regional Controller.
· Prepare municipal invoices, revenue-share schedules, HST filings, Statistics Canada reports, and other required financial reports.
· Oversee vendor invoice processing, customer collections, and related accounts payable and accounts receivable activities.
· Act as a trusted finance business partner to operational leaders by providing practical financial insight, challenging assumptions, and identifying opportunities to improve profitability and business performance.
· Spend regular time in the field at assigned operating sites to learn the business, understand operational processes and cost drivers, and connect financial results to day-to-day activities.
· Build strong relationships with site leaders and frontline teams, using field observations and operational knowledge to improve forecasts, reporting, controls, and decision-making.
· Lead, coach, and develop a team of approximately five to seven finance employees by setting expectations, delegating work, monitoring performance, and providing regular feedback and training.
· Build effective working relationships with employees, vendors, clients, and municipal contacts.
· Prepare ad hoc analysis and reports, and perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
· CPA designation and Bachelor’s in business or finance.
· Seven to ten years of progressive accounting experience in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership centric role.
· Demonstrated people leadership and supervisory experience, including coaching, performance management, and team development.
· Strong knowledge of month-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting, and audit support.
· Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and strong proficiency with Microsoft Office.
· Experience with accounting software; Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central experience is strongly preferred.
· Demonstrated experience using automation, reporting, workflow, or data tools to simplify finance processes, improve efficiency, and enhance the quality of business information.
· Experience with RTA Fleet Management Software, Navusoft, or Materials Manager is considered an asset.
· Excellent organizational, analytical, time-management, and problem-solving skills
· Strong communication, relationship-building, and business-partnering skills, with the curiosity and operational mindset to learn the business and influence decisions across all levels of the organization.
· A proactive, resourceful, and highly dependable approach, with the judgment and initiative to anticipate the Controller’s needs, take ownership, and follow issues through to resolution.
· Ability to manage competing priorities, meet tight deadlines, and follow through on commitments.
· Willingness and ability to travel regularly to assigned operating sites and spend time in field environments as part of learning and supporting the business.
What We Offer
· Company-paid Employee Assistance Program.
· Tuition reimbursement and professional development support.
· Opportunity to contribute within an entrepreneurial, growth-focused organization.
· Meaningful work with the ability to influence business performance and positive environmental outcomes.
· Opportunity to join one of Canada’s Greenest Employers.
