Position Summary
The Assistant Controller will play a key role in supporting the financial operations of non-profit organization the operates 20 thrift stores with an annual revenue of $60,000,000. This position will assist the Vice President of Accounting in Managing financial activities ensuring accuracy in financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with all regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, proactive, and aligned with the mission and values of the organization.
Responsibilities
- Oversees account payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger activities to maintain accurate financial records.
- Supports payroll processing and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Reconciles bank accounts and other financial accounts on a monthly basis.
- Provides assistance to the Vice President of Accounting to ensure adherence to internal controls and financial policies to safeguard organizational assets.
- Assists with audits, including but not limited to preparing necessary documents and responding to auditor inquiries.
- Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local tax reporting requirements applicable to non-profit organizations.
- Collaborates with the CFO and director of Finance to develop and monitor the organization’s annual budget.
- Provides support for forecasting and financial planning processes to ensure the organization meets financial goals.
- Supervises accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and performance evaluations.
- Works collaboratively across all departments to align financial practices with organizational objectives.
- Fosters a culture of transparency and accountability within the finance team.

Education, Experience and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role. Non-profit experience is a plus.
- Solid understanding of GAAP and non-profit accounting principles.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to the mission and values of the organization.
Preferred
- CPA designation or CPA candidate is strongly preferred.
- Non-profit experience is a plus
Environmental Factors
This role is based in the organization’s headquarters and may require occasional travel to the 20 thrift store locations. The Assistant Controller will work in a collaborative, mission driven environment where team members are passionate about making a difference in the community.
