Assistant Controller

Summary:

Beal Bank USA is seeking a highly detail-oriented Assistant Controller to support the Controller in overseeing daily accounting operations, reviewing the work of accounting staff, preparing financial and board reporting, supporting audits, and strengthening internal controls and accounting processes. This is a fully on-site position and is not eligible for remote or hybrid work.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to):

• Support the Controller in overseeing daily accounting operations and coordinating monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities.
• Provide day-to-day oversight and guidance to accounting staff, answer questions, clarify priorities, and help ensure work is completed accurately and on schedule.
• As part of rotational cross-training and coverage, review assigned accounting staff work, including journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, incoming wire and OFAC documentation, check-funding entries, and supporting schedules. Review responsibility is shared with the Accounting Operations Supervisor. 
• Review daily FR 2420, weekly FR 2900, monthly, semi-annual, and annual Nevada Thrift reports, and other assigned regulatory reports for accuracy, completeness, adequate support, and timely submission.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP and the bank's accounting policies.
• Prepare board and management reporting packages, including financial results, supporting schedules, and period-over-period variance analysis.
• Research unusual balances and variances, ensure reconciling items are resolved promptly, and maintain clear, well-supported audit trails.
• Coordinate and fulfill requests from external auditors, internal audit, regulators, tax advisors, and other assurance providers, and assist with tracking findings through resolution.
• Maintain and improve internal control documentation, accounting policies, close checklists, approval procedures, and segregation-of-duties controls.
• Identify and implement process improvements, including the automation of account reconciliations, reporting, and other recurring accounting processes.
• Oversee fixed-asset accounting, including additions, disposals, depreciation, account reconciliations, and supporting records.
• Support CECL accounting and reporting and assist with other technical accounting matters affecting the bank.
• Respond to ad hoc requests from the Controller and management, including account research, journal entries, reconciliations, financial analysis, and special projects.
• Maintain complete and confidential accounting records, communicate issues promptly, and escalate any potential errors, control exceptions, unusual activity, etc. to the Controller.

Qualifications (Education, Experience, Computer Skills, Certifications, Etc.):

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
• CPA certification or relevant accounting management experience in a financial institution required.
• Progressive accounting experience, including financial statement preparation, general ledger accounting, month-end close, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
• Strong working knowledge of U.S. generally accepted accounting principles and fundamental accounting processes.
• Working knowledge of CECL and related accounting and reporting requirements.
• Previous accounting or finance experience with a bank, credit union, or other regulated financial institution is preferred.
• Experience reviewing accounting work and providing clear, constructive day-to-day guidance to accounting staff.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, INDEX/MATCH, and analysis of large data sets.
• Strong analytical, variance analysis, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Exceptional attention to detail and a consistent commitment to accuracy and complete supporting documentation.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, use time effectively, meet deadlines, and adjust as business needs change.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to explain accounting matters clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively, protect confidential information, and work on-site during all scheduled working hours.
