Role:

The Vice President of Accounting & Finance serves as a Senior Financial Leader responsible for the execution, oversight, and continuous improvement of the Credit Union's accounting, finance, budgeting, regulatory reporting, and secondary market activities. This role provides leadership and direction for the Accounting and Finance Departments, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, the effective management of financial resources, and compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulations, and organizational policies.

Working collaboratively with the Chief Financial Officer, Executive and Senior Leadership Teams, committees, regulators, auditors, and external business partners, the Vice President of Accounting & Finance helps drive informed decision-making through accurate financial reporting, meaningful analytics, sound financial planning, and effective resource management. Through financial expertise, operational leadership, and a commitment to continuous improvement, this position helps ensure the Credit Union remains financially sound, compliant, efficient, and well-positioned to achieve its strategic objectives while delivering exceptional value to its Members.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

• Accounting: Provides leadership and operational oversight of the Accounting Department, ensuring the Credit Union's financial results and condition are accurately recorded and reported in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Oversees month- and year-end close processes, accounts payable, general ledger administration, account reconciliations, fixed assets, taxes, allowance-related accounting activities, and internal controls. Ensures the timely preparation and submission of all required internal and external financial reports while promoting continuous improvement in accounting processes, systems, and reporting capabilities. Supports organizational objectives through accurate financial information, strong fiscal stewardship, and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. Coordinates and oversees required regulatory and financial reporting, including NCUA Call Reports, Form 990, tax filings, and other federal, state, and industry reporting requirements. Serves as a primary liaison for financial examinations, audits, and reviews, working closely with auditors, examiners, and internal stakeholders to facilitate information requests and ensure timely resolution of findings. Maintains compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulations, and organizational policies while promoting a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.

• Finance: Provides leadership and operational oversight for the Finance Department, ensuring that financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, analysis, and reporting to support the Credit Union's strategic objectives and financial performance. Works closely with the Chief Financial Officer to support balance sheet management, interest rate risk monitoring, liquidity management, investment reporting, and Asset Liability Management (ALM). Develops robust financial analysis, modeling, and management reporting to support informed decision-making, expense management, profitability goals, and long-term financial strength. Assists in developing and monitoring organizational budgets and financial plans, identifying trends, risks, opportunities, and corrective actions as appropriate. Supports the development, administration, and monitoring of the annual operating and capital budgets. Assists department Leaders in preparing budget assumptions, forecasts, and financial projections while monitoring financial performance against established goals. Provides analysis and recommendations on variances, operational efficiency, and resource allocation to support sound financial decision-making and the achievement of strategic objectives.

• Secondary Desk Management: Provides leadership and oversight for the Credit Union's Secondary Desk activities, including participation loan purchases and sales, loan sale programs, and related balance sheet management initiatives. Maintains strong relationships with financial institutions, investors, brokers, and business partners to support strategic growth objectives and optimize portfolio performance. Collaborates with the Chief Financial Officer and Lending Leadership to evaluate opportunities, monitor portfolio concentrations, assess financial impact, and support effective management of liquidity, capital, and interest rate risk. Ensures all activities are performed in accordance with organizational policies, contractual obligations, and applicable regulatory requirements

• Cross-Functional Leadership and Organizational Partnership: Represents the Accounting and Finance Departments through active participation in organizational committees and cross-functional initiatives. Serves on and supports committees including the Asset Liability Committee (ALCO), Investment Committee, Non-Interest Income Committee (NIIC), Asset Review Committee (ARC) and Pricing Committee. This role will also support the Product & Services Steering Committee, Risk Management Committee (RMCO), and other groups as assigned. Partners with business units across the Credit Union to provide financial guidance, analytical support, and insights that strengthen organizational performance and support strategic initiatives.

• Team & Talent Management: Provides and ensures effective leadership, coaching, and development for Accounting and Finance Departments. Fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous learning, and operational excellence through effective hiring, training, performance management, succession planning, and professional development initiatives. Ensures departmental resources and talent are aligned with organizational priorities and strategic objectives.

• Budgeting & Financial Management: Oversees the administration, monitoring, and reporting of the Credit Union's annual operating and capital budgets. Works closely with department Leaders and the Chief Financial Officer to develop forecasts, evaluate financial performance, analyze budget variances, and identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and financial results. Provides meaningful financial analysis and recommendations to support informed decision-making, effective resource allocation, and achievement of organizational objectives. Supports the ongoing development of financial plans, forecasting models, and management reporting tools that strengthen financial performance and organizational accountability.

• Regulatory Compliance, Audit & Exam Management: Ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements and applicable laws, including the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control. Provides Executive leadership for internal and external financial audits and regulatory examinations, ensuring all accounting activities adhere to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and operational integrity in order to garner high levels of confidence by stakeholders. Proactively and regularly reviews financial reports to ensure accuracy. Coordinates the preparation and timely submission of 5300, 990/990T reports and all requested documentation for scheduled and ad hoc audits, as well as federal, state, and industry examinations. Follows protocols for identifying, tracking, and remediating findings, leveraging cross-functional collaboration to address root causes and implement sustainable corrective actions. Regularly reviews audit outcomes and exam results with Senior Leadership, integrating key insights into strategic planning, and continuous improvement initiatives. Promotes a culture of proactive risk identification, accountability, operational excellence, and safeguarding Member interests.

• Strategic Vendor Management: Oversees the financial administration, due diligence, and ongoing monitoring of vendor relationships in accordance with the Credit Union's Vendor Management Policy and applicable regulatory requirements. Participates in the evaluation, selection, contract review, renewal, and performance assessment of third-party service providers, with particular emphasis on vendors supporting Accounting, Finance, Treasury, Secondary Market, and other assigned business functions. Works collaboratively with business units, risk management personnel, and Executive Leadership to ensure vendor relationships provide appropriate value, maintain acceptable risk profiles, and support organizational objectives. Assists in monitoring vendor performance, contract compliance, service-level expectations, and financial commitments while identifying opportunities for operational efficiencies, cost management, and continuous improvement.

• Project Management: Champions a culture of innovation and continuous improvement by sponsoring/supporting projects and ensuring optimal allocation of financial and human capital. Prioritizes and allocates financial and talent resources to projects appropriately.

• Policies & Procedures: Adheres to and provides input on updates to Financial policies. Originates procedures, and guidelines and presents them to the management, relevant committees, and/or personnel as required. Policies include, but are not limited to, Budget, Allowance for Loan & Lease Loss, Investments, Earnings & Reserves, Interest Rate Risk & Funds Management, Non-Deposit Investment Programs, Fixed Assets, Derivatives, Liquidity, Concentration Risk, etc.

• Analytics & Reporting: Maintains comprehensive analytics and reporting standards, reviewing high-level management reports and financial projections to inform strategic decisions regarding budget, investments, capacity, liquidity, pricing, asset quality, concentration, etc.  Presents monthly statistics and reports and proposes short-, medium- and long-term approaches to manage desired outcomes accordingly. 

• Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity: Supports the ongoing development, maintenance, testing, and execution of disaster recovery and business continuity plans for the Accounting and Finance Departments. Works collaboratively with Information Technology, Risk Management, and business unit Leaders to identify critical financial processes, maintain recovery procedures, and ensure operational readiness in the event of a disruption. Supports periodic testing, training, and documentation updates to promote continuity of financial operations, regulatory reporting, liquidity management, and other critical finance functions. Assists in evaluating risks, implementing corrective actions, and strengthening departmental resilience to support uninterrupted service and compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements.

• Committee & Board Involvement: Provides Senior Leadership representation and strategic input across a broad array of internal and external committees and boards integral to the organization's needs. Leads, attends, and/or actively participates in Committee Meetings pertaining to Governance, Financial, Lending, Risk, and Technology, ensuring that relevant and required information is shared and insights inform policy formulation, financial needs, risk appetite, and organizational priorities. Supports the CFO who leads the Asset Liability Committee (ALCO); and serves on the Pricing Committee, Investment Committee, and serves as an active and/or voting Member of the Asset Review Committee (ARC), Non-Interest Income Committee (NIIC), Risk Management Committee (RMCO). Supports Board and organizational development by facilitating financial-related trainings and presentations.

• Industry Partnerships: Cultivates and sustains industry partnerships to advance organizational objectives and enhance Member value. Engages with industry associations and community groups to advocate for organizational interests, influence emerging standards, exchange best practices, and strengthen Credit Union relationships in service to the Credit Union movement.

Education, Experience, Skills, Competencies & Culture Expectations

Required Education:

• Bachelor's Degree emphasizing Accounting, Finance, Statistics, or business administration.

Preferred Education:

• MBA or master’s degree specializing in Finance, Accounting or Portfolio Management highly preferred.

Required Experience:

• Accounting & Finance Expertise: Extensive experience in accounting and finance at a financial institution inclusive of the areas listed above in the job responsibilities. Familiarity with accounting and finance practices, policies, procedures and processes.
• Financial Acumen: Strong skills in budgeting, forecasting, and analyzing financial reports related to the management of a financial institution.
• Leadership and Management: Proven experience in leading teams, setting goals, and driving performance. This includes managing Team Members, conducting performance reviews, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
• Strategic Planning: Experience in developing and implementing strategies that align with the Credit Union's overall goals, including identifying growth opportunities and adapting to changing market trends.
• Regulatory Compliance, Audit & Exam Management: In-depth understanding of state and federal regulations, ensuring compliance and minimizing risk.
• Strategic Vendor Management: Proven experience in vendor management including contract reviews, RFP’s, negotiations, ongoing due diligence and relationship management.
• Project Management: Ability to oversee enterprise-wide projects and departmental initiatives, specially related to Accounting & Finance.
• Policy & Procedure Ownership: Ability to set finance, accounting, and other related policies and procedures pertaining to functional areas.

• Industry Experience: Eight to ten years of experience in the credit union, banking and/or financial services industry, with a focus on accounting and finance.

Physical Requirements:

Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 15 lbs. Must be capable of climbing/descending stairs in emergency situations. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including computer, tablet, telephone, copier, printer, scanner, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance. Work may occasionally require travel throughout the KC Metro area, and potentially outside of the KC Metro area.  Valid driver’s license required.

Work Environment:

Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in a climate-controlled office environment with minimal noise.
