POSITION SUMMARY: The Temporary Accountant reports to the Executive Director of Business and Operations and is responsible for conducting a comprehensive internal review of the financial records and accounting processes associated with the District's Capital Projects Office. This temporary position will reconcile bond-related financial records, establish standardized accounting procedures, improve financial documentation and reporting, and develop systems to strengthen financial oversight. Upon completion of the project, responsibility for the ongoing financial management of the Capital Projects Office will transition to a Warwick Public Schools Senior Accountant.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
- Conduct a comprehensive review of the financial records and accounting practices within the Capital Projects Office.
- Reconcile bond-related financial transactions, expenditures, and supporting documentation.
- Identify discrepancies and work collaboratively with district staff to resolve outstanding financial issues.
- Organize and maintain financial records to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable accounting standards.
- Develop and document standardized accounting procedures and internal controls for capital project expenditures.
- Recommend and implement improved financial reporting and reconciliation processes.
- Assist in establishing systems that enhance financial oversight, accountability, and recordkeeping.
- Work closely with the Capital Projects Coordinator, Director of Finance, and other district staff to ensure an orderly transition of financial responsibilities.
- Prepare written documentation outlining new procedures and recommendations for ongoing financial management.
- Train appropriate finance staff on newly established accounting procedures as needed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible accounting or governmental finance experience, preferably in public sector or school district accounting.
- Demonstrated experience with financial reconciliations, internal controls, account analysis, and financial reporting.
- Experience with bond accounting, capital project accounting, or governmental fund accounting preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities and meeting project deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial accounting software.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field required. CPA certification or governmental accounting experience is preferred.
