About the role

The Tax Manager is responsible for leading direct and indirect tax compliance activities for the organization, with a primary focus on multistate sales and use tax matters related to natural gas, electricity, and LNG transactions. This role oversees day-to-day tax operations, supports accounting activities in accordance with IFRS, supervises two Tax Analysts, and partners with internal stakeholders and external advisors to maintain compliance, strengthen processes, and improve the efficiency of the tax function.

What you'll do

#1 • Lead the preparation and review of monthly and annual state sales and use tax and excise tax returns.

#2 • Oversee the reconciliation of tax accounts and support tax accruals, year-end estimates, and related financial reporting activities.

#3 • Manage state and local tax registrations, renewals, certifications, and licensing requirements.

#4 • Maintain accurate tax records, including exemption certificates, direct pay permits, and supporting documentation. #5 • Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations and communicate impacts to relevant internal stakeholders.

#6 • Research direct and indirect tax issues, prepare written analyses, and recommend practical compliance solutions.

#7 • Review contracts and confirmations to identify tax implications and ensure appropriate compliance actions are taken. #8 • Respond to tax notices, prepare correspondence with tax authorities, and coordinate with state and local agencies as needed.

#9 • Plan for and manage tax audits by working with external auditors, advisors, internal tax teams, and business partners.

#10 • Identify and implement opportunities to improve tax processes, reporting, and automation.

#11 • Provide guidance to commercial, settlement, accounting, and administrative teams on tax-related matters.

#12 • Supervise, coach, and review the work of two Senior Tax Analysts to ensure timely, accurate, and high-quality deliverables.

#13 • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end accounting close activities, reconciliations, and audit requests as needed.

#14 • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned, including limited travel when required.

Qualifications

Educational Requirement: Accounting Degree

Required Skills: At least 7 years of sales & use tax and income tax experience and 2 years of financial accounting experience.
