Basic Function
The Tax Manager position supports the efforts of the Accounting Area in overseeing the accounting and tax matters of the company. The Tax Manager will oversee the accounting and tax policies and procedures, partner with the selected external tax firm for filings, coordinate with the selected audit firm for the annual financial statement audits and oversee corporate income tax return processes of federal and state filings.
General Responsibilities
The Tax Manager position is responsible for overseeing the accounting and tax policies and procedures of the company. The Director of Tax position will have a thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Statutory Accounting Principles, Internal Revenue Service Codes and Regulations and various state regulations. In addition, the Director of Tax is responsible for the following:
- Leading the preparation, review, and filing of the corporate federal and state income tax returns
- Ensuring adherence to federal and state tax regulations and laws
- Staying up to date on tax laws and regulations
- Conducting tax research to ensure compliance and impacts to business
- Partnering with department leaders to identify and implement tax planning strategies
- Partnering with external tax firm for best-in-class strategy and positioning
- Assisting in the monthly close process - building tax estimates and ensuring reconciliation requirements are met
- Assisting in the annual financial audit process
- Reviewing the annual audit reports
- Reviewing the work papers submitted to the audit firm
- Reviewing quarterly board reports
- Assisting with preparation for audit committee meetings and topics
- Coordinating and reviewing required tax payments
- Leading special projects as needed
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in science or business administration with an emphasis in Accounting, Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Tax, an active CPA is preferred
Work Experience
- 5+ years in tax accounting, with insurance industry experience preferred
