Position Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced and driven Tax Manager to join our tax team in La Verne, California. In this role, you will oversee the preparation and review of complex tax engagements, lead tax planning strategies, and manage client relationships across a diverse portfolio, including corporations, partnerships, trusts, and high-net-worth individuals. The Tax Manager will play a key leadership role in the firm, supervising staff, ensuring compliance, and providing strategic guidance on federal and multistate tax matters, with an emphasis on Washington state and local tax considerations.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee and review federal tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and trusts, ensuring accuracy and compliance
Manage the preparation and review of tax extensions, estimated payments, and tax projections
Conduct advanced research and analysis of complex federal and multistate tax issues, including California State business taxes (e.g., B&O tax), and communicate recommendations to clients and firm leadership
Lead tax planning strategies and compliance initiatives tailored to client needs
Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, managing relationships and delivering high-quality service
Manage and oversee IRS audits, notices, and correspondence, as well as Washington Department of Revenue inquiries
Supervise, mentor, and develop Tax Seniors and Associates, including reviewing workpapers and providing ongoing feedback
Ensure adherence to firm quality control standards and maintain well-documented, organized files
Monitor changes in federal and Washington tax laws and proactively advise clients and internal teams on impacts
Drive process improvements and efficiencies within tax workflows and software utilization (e.g., Lacerte)
Collaborate with partners on client engagements, business development opportunities, and practice growth initiatives
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
Active CPA license (California or ability to obtain reciprocity)
5–8+ years of progressive tax experience, preferably in public accounting
Strong expertise in federal tax regulations and multistate taxation
Experience with California State tax considerations, including B&O tax and nexus rules
Extensive experience reviewing complex returns across multiple entity types
Demonstrated leadership and team management experience
Excellent analytical, organizational, and project management skills
Strong client service and communication skills
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel
Preferred:
Experience with California Department of Revenue audits and compliance
Proven experience managing client relationships and leading engagements
Experience with complex tax planning and consulting projects
Proficiency with Proconnect and tax research platforms such as CCH or BNA
Salary Range
$85,000 – $120,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications
