About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced Tax Director to join our Private Client advisory practice, serving high net worth individuals, families, trusts, estates, and closely held businesses. This leadership role is responsible for providing strategic tax planning, technical review, client advisory services, engagement management, and team development while partnering with clients on complex federal, state, and local tax matters. The ideal candidate brings extensive public accounting experience, deep expertise in individual and fiduciary taxation, and a passion for mentoring professionals and growing client relationships.
Responsibilities:
- Perform technical reviews of complex tax returns for high net worth individuals, pass through entities, trusts, estates, and gift tax engagements.
- Advise clients on complex business and personal transactions, providing strategic tax planning and guidance on tax implications and compliance.
- Lead multiple large and complex tax engagements while managing project timelines, budgets, staffing, workflow, and client expectations.
- Research complex or emerging tax issues and prepare technical memorandums supporting tax positions and recommendations.
- Develop and maintain trusted relationships with private clients and identify opportunities to expand advisory services across tax and consulting offerings.
- Collaborate with business development initiatives by identifying cross selling opportunities and supporting client growth strategies.
- Monitor changes in federal, state, and local tax laws and communicate updates to internal teams and clients.
- Lead technical training initiatives and mentor managers, supervisors, and staff to support professional development and technical excellence.
- Oversee engagement economics, billing, scheduling, resource planning, and risk management to ensure quality client service.
- Contribute to thought leadership through technical presentations, educational sessions, publications, and industry speaking engagements.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Tax, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA, JD, or Enrolled Agent credential with authorization to practice before the IRS.
- Minimum of 8 years of public accounting tax experience or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of 4 years of leadership experience managing client engagements and developing teams.
- Advanced knowledge of tax planning and compliance for high net worth individuals, trusts, estates, gift taxation, and pass through entities.
- Strong understanding of federal, state, and local tax laws and accounting principles.
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple complex engagements while maintaining exceptional client service.
- Excellent analytical, communication, leadership, and relationship management skills.
- Ability to conduct advanced tax research and provide practical, strategic recommendations.
- Willingness to work in a hybrid environment with in office collaboration approximately half of the time.
Desired Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Accounting, Taxation, or a related discipline.
- Experience leading tax planning strategies for high net worth individuals and closely held businesses.
- Proven success developing client relationships and supporting business development initiatives.
- Experience mentoring and developing tax professionals through formal training and coaching.
- Strong presentation, technical writing, and thought leadership experience.
- Expertise with complex tax planning, fiduciary taxation, estate planning, and succession planning.
