Compensation: $150,000 – $225,000+, depending on experience
A growing public accounting firm is seeking an experienced Tax Director to lead complex tax engagements, manage client relationships, review tax work, and provide technical guidance to staff.
This role is ideal for a senior tax professional who enjoys working directly with clients, mentoring teams, reviewing complex returns, and helping drive practice growth. The firm works with small to mid-sized businesses across a variety of industries, along with individuals, partnerships, corporations, S-Corps, and trusts.
What You’ll Do
- Serve as the day-to-day contact and main point of contact for clients
- Manage complex tax engagements from assignment through review, billing, and completion
- Review individual, corporate, partnership, S-Corp, and trust tax returns
- Handle larger and more complicated tax returns while delegating work to tax preparers
- Provide technical tax review and approval for assigned projects
- Research complex tax matters and ensure conclusions are properly documented
- Respond to federal and state tax notices on behalf of clients
- Communicate complex tax issues clearly to clients and non-tax professionals
- Build long-term client relationships and provide tailored tax guidance
- Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate tax staff
- Align staff assignments with experience level and qualifications
- Support recruiting, staff development, training, and internal professional development
- Identify new business opportunities within the current client base and broader referral network
- Participate in practice development through referral sources, community involvement, and industry activities
- Stay current on tax law, economic trends, legislative changes, and technology tools
- Leverage firm technology to improve team productivity, accuracy, and efficiency
What We’re Looking For
- 10+ years of experience preparing and reviewing complex tax returns
- Strong experience with individual and business tax returns
- Experience with small to mid-sized businesses across a variety of industries
- Experience reviewing corporate, partnership, S-Corp, individual, and trust returns
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
- CPA or EA required
- MST or JD with tax emphasis preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word
- Experience with UltraTax, tax planning software, and cloud-based tax research tools
- Strong technical tax review skills
- Ability to analyze complex issues and distinguish relevant information from irrelevant information
- Strong client communication, negotiation, and persuasion skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Professional judgment, discretion, and ability to handle confidential matters
- Ability to interface with multiple management levels and think creatively to solve client issues
Work Arrangement
This is a hybrid role. After the probationary period, the schedule is expected to be 3 days per week in office.
