Position Summary The Tax Analyst is an entry-level role withing the Tax Department designed to provide broad exposure to both direct and indirect taxes. The Tax Analyst will be appointed a mentor and will support all members of the tax team in a variety of tax related tasks such as return preparation, rebates, research, recovery, and audits. This is a great opportunity to get exposure to a wide variety of tax types in many different tax jurisdictions while developing the foundational technical and practical skills. Note: This is a 12 month full time position, and the employee will be expected to report to work in person at the WestJet Campus in Calgary. Key Deliverables This opportunity will present learning opportunities in the following disciplines:
Tax Compliance & Research: Canadian, US corporate and International income tax, tax research, documenting tax positions, writing memos. Indirect Tax & Recovery Projects: PST, GST/HST/QST, international VAT, excise and fuel tax rebates. Audit Support: Preparing responses to audit requests from tax authorities. Accounting & Analysis: Journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, reasonability analysis. Other Tax Areas: Airline ticket tax, lodging tax, digital services tax, Canadian corporate tax, payroll taxes. Ad Hoc Projects: Cross-functional requests supporting members of the Tax team.
Education & Business Acumen
Currently enrolled in an applicable University program, bachelor’s degree/or new graduate in accounting with an interest in a tax career
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills including exceptional planning and organizational skills Must be analytical and have effective problem-solving skills
Technical Skills
The candidate should possess the following technical skills:
Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Excel, and Word. Ability to work with large datasets. Foundational understanding of accounting, financial reporting, and taxation. Experience with accounting or tax preparation software is an asset.
