Stein Sperling is seeking a Staff Accountant to join our Accounting & Finance Department. Reporting to the Accounting Manager, this position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting month-end close processes, and ensuring compliance with firm policies and applicable regulations. This role offers an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional to grow within a collaborative and professional services environment while contributing to the financial operations of the firm.
The Staff Accountant works closely with Accounting leadership, attorneys, and administrative staff to support the firm's day-to-day accounting functions. Responsibilities include maintaining the general ledger, preparing accurate and timely journal entries in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and assisting with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
In support of the firm's financial reporting processes, the Staff Accountant assists with month-end and year-end close activities, including account reconciliations, variance analysis, and preparation of budget-to-actual reports. The Staff Accountant identifies trends, investigates discrepancies, and provides timely financial information to management to support informed decision-making.
The Staff Accountant is also responsible for processing accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, ensuring timely vendor payments and accurate client invoicing. Additional duties include reconciling bank accounts and credit card statements, processing and tracking employee expense reimbursements, and ensuring compliance with firm expense policies.
Within the legal accounting environment, the Staff Accountant assists with the monitoring and reconciliation of trust and IOLTA accounts to ensure compliance with applicable state bar regulations. The position also supports payroll processing and related tax filings, assists with tax compliance activities such as sales tax returns and 1099 filings, and helps maintain organized, audit-ready financial records and documentation.
The Staff Accountant plays an important role in supporting the firm's annual audit process by preparing schedules, gathering supporting documentation, and responding to auditor requests. The position also collaborates with attorneys and staff to resolve billing, expense, and accounting inquiries while identifying opportunities to improve accounting processes and strengthen internal controls.

Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 2+ years of accounting experience; prior experience in a law firm or professional services environment preferred
- Solid understanding of GAAP and general accounting principles
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Familiarity with legal billing software (e.g., Elite, Aderant, Clio) is a plus.
- Knowledge of trust accounting and IOLTA requirements is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to maintain accurate financial records
- Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with attorneys, management, and administrative staff
- Ability to handle confidential financial and client information with discretion and professionalism
Preferred:
- CPA license, CPA candidate status, or progress toward certification
