Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Senior Director of Accounting will be responsible for overseeing the Foundation's accounting operations, financial close process, internal controls, audit activities, and financial compliance. This position will ensure the accuracy and integrity of the organization's financial records and provide leadership for accounting operations supporting both The V Foundation and affiliated entities.
Please note that the salary range for this position is $114,000 -$142,000. It is uncommon for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role. Actual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to, responsibilities of the position, experience, skill set, work location, internal pay equity, as well as market and business considerations.
Key Responsibilities and Activities
Accounting Oversight | 50%
- Maintain the accounting system Chart of Accounts and accounting structure.
- Develop and maintain financial recordkeeping and accounting systems.
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and accounting processes to ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain and enhance internal controls and financial safeguards.
- Review and update accounting policies, procedures, and the Accounting Manual.
- Review and manage processing of cash receipts and disbursements.
- Direct annual W-9 and 1099 compliance processes.
- Prepare and review journal entries.
- Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Cash, Payroll, and Fixed Asset accounting activities.
- Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end closes.
Audit and Compliance |30%
- Coordinate all audit activity.
- Serve as primary contact for external auditors and manage completion of annual audits and Forms 990.
- Review account reconciliations and investigate unusual transactions.
- Ensure timely reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts, including cash, investments, grants receivable/payable, intercompany accounts, and fixed assets.
Internal Controls | 20%
- Reconcile investment accounts and prepare related accounting entries.
- Prepare monthly and annual financial statements.
- Compile external financial reports and schedules.
- Review and approve financial grant reports submitted by grant recipients.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff.
- Serve as an internal resource on accounting, compliance, and financial control matters.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Working knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including ASC 958 and UPMIFA.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal control frameworks.
- Minimum 6-8 years of accounting experience, preferably in public accounting or a complex nonprofit organization.
- CPA strongly preferred.
- Experience managing audits, financial close processes, and accounting operations.
- Experience supervising accounting staff.
- Experience with NetSuite preferred.
- Advanced Excel skills required.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
