The Opportunity
The Senior Financial Accountant, G&A, is a critical position for the G&A team. The incumbent reports to the Accounting Manager, G&A and will be responsible for preparation of complex corporate financial statements, providing financial analysis to the Senior Management team, preparing complex financial analysis, support G&A and Project budget and forecast activities and assist with year-end audit. This requires superior technical accounting knowledge, analytical strength and attention to detail, business partnership skills, and the ability to meet challenging deadlines.
Key ActivitiesBased on Chartwell Retirement Residence’s business plan and corporate goals, and in consultation with the
Accounting Manager, G&A, the Senior Financial Accountant, G&A will be responsible for:
- Producing complex General & Administrative financial reporting packages in strict adherence to the set procedures on a monthly basis for senior management.
- Providing financial analysis, review and support to management and internal departments with regards to concerns, reporting issues and variance explanations.
- Preparing analysis, review and reconciliations for all corporate salaries and benefits on a monthly basis, including accounting for various compensation plans
- Assisting with financial support to corporate departments and manage financial risk relating to General & Administrative expenses.
- Preparation of project cost financials as it relates to IT Infrastructure and Software Development Projects and monitoring of these costs throughout the month
- Undertake technical accounting research pertaining to the IFRS treatment of the IT Project costs
- Preparing, completing and reviewing monthly working papers and reconciliations, summarizing and reporting on any risks, issues or areas of concern
- Prepare and provide consolidated analysis for quarterly reviews and audits
- Communicate professionally and effectively with Senior Management, other Finance team members, other corporate departments and external third parties.
- Assist in the planning, coordinating and completion and review of the General & Administrative annual budgets, working collaboratively with Corporate Senior Management and Executives teams, Strategic Planning & Decision Support, to ensure budgets are prepared accurately and on timely basis. Assist in the completion and review of the budgeting of corporate allocations and chargebacks to properties.
- Train and assist corporate departments to understand their General & Administrative expenses, ensuring accountability for spending.
- Proactively identifies process improvements within G&A area, modifies existing and designs new processes that maximize operational efficiency
- Special projects as assigned by Senior Accounting Manager, G&A
Experience:
- Seven (7) to nine (9) years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in the senior housing, real estate, hospitality, and/or health care sectors
- Experience working with Canadian Public companies with numerous and varying reporting requirements
- Advanced knowledge of financial reporting and accounting and experienced in resolving complex accounting issues.
Education:
- University degree in the field of Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
- Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CGA, CMA) or equivalent work experience
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of IFRS is required.
- Strong financial and analytical skills, as well as demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong knowledge of complex accounting, and various aspects of accounting and finance
- Strong computer skills – Excel (required), ERP Software, Yardi, Hyperion, OneStream, Microsoft Office.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills at all organization levels
- The ability to organize and prioritize work to meet defined deadlines in a large fast-paced work environment
- Easily adapts to changes, delays, or unexpected events in the work environment
- Able to work and solve problems independently with minimal supervision
- Self-starter, self-motivated with proactive and process ownership focus
- Able to work well with others and promote a positive team spirit
