DEPARTMENT: Finance Office
REPORTS TO: Director of Finance & Operations
SUMMARY:
The Special Education Accountant supports the Finance and Special Education Departments by ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting for all Special Education expenditures. This role is responsible for entering, tracking, and reconciling reportable Special Education costs; managing tuition, transportation, and contracted service invoices for outplaced students; and preparing state-required submissions. The position collaborates closely with the finance team on IDEA Grant application, as well as maintaining precise financial records that uphold district, state, and federal requirements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Enter, monitor, and reconcile all Special Education reportable expenditures in accordance with state and federal requirements.
Prepare and submit state reporting, including Excess Cost, Medicaid documentation support, and other mandated submissions.
Maintain detailed financial records for Special Education tuition, transportation, contracted services, and related costs.
Process, verify, and reconcile tuition, transportation, and service invoices for outplaced Special Education students.
Ensure invoices align with student placements, IEP requirements, and contracted rates.
Communicate with vendors, agencies, and internal departments to resolve discrepancies.
Collaborate with the finance team on IDEA Grant budgeting, tracking, reimbursement requests, and documentation.
Work closely with the Special Education Department to ensure accurate alignment between student services and financial records.
Provide financial data, reports, and analysis to district leadership as needed.
Maintain organized, audit-ready documentation for all Special Education financial activity.
Ensure adherence to district policies, state regulations, federal grant requirements, and internal controls.
Assist with internal and external audits, providing documentation and responding to inquiries.

Knowledge of accounting principles, financial reconciliation, and audit-aligned recordkeeping.
Ability to manage multiple deadlines with accuracy and professionalism.
EDUCATION:
A bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or requisite job experience is preferred. 3-5 years of relevant professional experience preferred, with a background in governmental accounting being advantageous.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively with parents, staff and students.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts appropriate to the position.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Basic understanding of job-related computer applications; experience with MUNIS software is preferred.
