Job Description
Our client is a well-established, boutique Chartered Professional Accounting firm based in the North York/eastern region of Toronto (M3C 1W3). The firm specializes in delivering sophisticated financial solutions, with a core focus on small business owners, high-net-worth clientele, cross-border tax, and complex tax planning. This is a full-time, Hybrid (Remote & In-Office) role for an experienced Senior Tax Manager.
This is far more than a typical reviewer role—this position serves as the internal practice leader responsible for the day-to-day operations, production quality, and technical execution of the firm’s tax function. Acting as the operational champion for file production, the Senior Tax Manager will ensure tax and year-end files are delivered on time, to a high standard, and in strict alignment with internal procedures.
This leadership role will directly manage a team of staff accountants—assigning work, mentoring, monitoring performance and billable hours, and ensuring appropriate client billing. Reporting directly to the Firm Owner, you will provide regular reporting on production metrics, team utilization, realization, turnaround times, and quality control to ensure firm KPIs are consistently met.
Job Duties & Key Responsibilities
- Tax Leadership: Lead and manage end-to-end Canadian tax compliance and tax planning engagements for small business owners and high-net-worth clients.
- Compliance & Review: Review and finalize T1, T2, T3, T5013, and related filings, including complex elections, disclosures, and supporting schedules.
- Cross-Border Oversight: Oversee and review cross-border (Canada–U.S.) tax files where applicable, ensuring correct reporting, treaty positions, and proper documentation.
- Advisory & Planning: Identify planning opportunities and provide written and verbal recommendations on topics such as: owner-manager planning, corporate reorganizations, remuneration strategies, capital gains planning, and succession considerations.
- Year-End Execution: Ensure accurate preparation and review of year-end corporate files, including the coordination of financial statements, tax provisions, and tax reconciliations.
- Portfolio Management: Manage a diverse portfolio of clients; maintain strict timelines, deliverables, and service quality while proactively communicating status updates.
- Team Development: Supervise, coach, and develop a team of staff accountants; assign workflow, review files, provide technical feedback, and support overall professional growth.
- Quality Control: Maintain exceptional internal standards and quality control; review workpapers, ensure completeness, minimize rework, and elevate file documentation.
- Technical Research: Research and interpret tax legislation and CRA administrative guidance; translate complex rules into clear, practical, and actionable advice for clients.
- CRA Representation: Support CRA matters including responding to audits/requests, preparing audit support, handling notices, and assisting with objections when required.
- Operational Excellence: Collaborate with firm leadership on workflow improvements, templates, and best practices to increase efficiency and scalability.
- Business Growth: Contribute to firm growth by identifying additional client needs, proposing value-added services, and supporting advisory engagements.
Qualifications
- Professional Designation: CPA (CA, CGA, CMA) or equivalent, licensed in good standing in Canada.
- Tax Specialization: Completion of, or current enrollment in, the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Course.
- Experience: Minimum of 7+ years of progressive tax experience within a Canadian public accounting environment (small, mid-sized, or national firm).
- Technical Expertise: Advanced understanding of Canadian tax regulations, legislation, and compliance requirements.
- Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving, analytical capacity, and an exceptionally high attention to detail.
- Communication: Exceptional verbal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex tax concepts clearly to clients and team members.
- Strategic Mindset: Proven ability to develop tailored client solutions that optimize tax outcomes, achieve financial objectives, and drive firm revenue.
