Senior Plant Accountant

Pavement Maintenance Group is hiring a Senior Plant Accountant for our Madison, North Carolina operation. This is a broad, hands-on individual-contributor role for someone who enjoys connecting accounting with inventory, production, purchasing, and day-to-day plant activity.

The opportunity can be a strong next step for a Staff Accountant, Cost Accountant, or Accounting Analyst who has solid accounting fundamentals and is ready to grow into broader ownership. It can also suit an experienced plant accountant who prefers meaningful, hands-on work over a narrowly specialized or heavily managerial role.

You will work closely with experienced finance and operations leaders, learn the business from the plant floor up, and help turn operating activity into accurate financial information and useful decisions.

What You'll Do

• Perform and support month-end close, including journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, reporting, and variance explanations.

• Help ensure inventory and manufacturing costs are accurate, including raw materials, work in process, finished goods, labor, overhead, and cost of goods sold.

• Participate in physical inventories and cycle counts, reconcile discrepancies, and work with plant personnel to identify and correct their causes.

• Investigate material, usage, scrap, production, purchasing, and other operating variances.

• Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash reconciliations, fixed assets, and other general-accounting responsibilities in a lean plant environment.

• Assist with pricing, margin analysis, budgets, forecasts, and operational reporting.

• Partner directly with production, purchasing, sales, payroll, and plant leadership to improve financial visibility and decision-making.

• Review timecard information and coordinate accurate regional payroll submissions.

• Support audits, internal controls, system improvements, and process changes.

• Look beyond the spreadsheet, ask questions, and help resolve problems at their operational source.

What We're Looking For

• A bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

• A sound understanding of debits and credits, journal entries, the general ledger, account reconciliations, and financial statements.

• Progressive accounting experience; candidates ready to step up from a Staff Accountant, Cost Accountant, Accounting Analyst, or similar role are encouraged to apply.

• Manufacturing, inventory, cost-accounting, distribution, or other physical-product experience is preferred. A strong accounting foundation and genuine interest in learning plant accounting can also succeed here.

• Strong Excel skills and comfort learning and working in ERP and reporting systems.

• A practical, investigative mindset and the confidence to ask operations questions when the numbers do not make sense.

• Strong communication, accuracy, follow-through, and the ability to manage competing deadlines.

• Willingness to work onsite, spend time outside the accounting office, and participate in physical inventory activities.

The Environment

This is not a remote or desk-only accounting position. The successful candidate will regularly engage with the manufacturing operation and should be comfortable in an active, practical plant environment. You will be expected to build relationships across the facility, observe processes firsthand, and help when the work requires getting out from behind the desk.
