This position is responsible for accounting and financial reporting activities, including the preparation of financial statements, the execution of the monthly close process, and the reconciliation of accounts. The role plays a key part in supporting SOC 1 audit readiness and ensuring the integrity of internal controls and financial data. Responsibilities also include assisting with tax return preparation and other required filings, as well as supporting a variety of general accounting functions.
This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Director, Controller’s Office. The role is based in our downtown Kansas City, MO office, with the opportunity for a hybrid schedule following a successful training period.
Requirements- Financial Reporting & Analysis: Prepare, review, and analyze periodic financial statements across multiple entities, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and alignment with accounting standards. Perform variance analysis and investigate fluctuations to support informed decision-making and compliance.
- Closing & Reconciliation Management: Lead and support month-end and quarter-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and cash oversight, ensuring timely and accurate reporting while applying sound judgment in complex accounting scenarios.
- Audit & Compliance: Support audit readiness by preparing financial statements, schedules, and supporting documentation, and responding to auditor inquiries for both financial statement and SOC 1 audits. Ensure consistency across the general ledger, financial statements, and supporting schedules, resolving discrepancies as needed.
- Account Lifecycle Management: Oversee the closing and transition of accounts and other complex financial activities, requiring detailed coordination, risk awareness, and thorough documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Tax & Regulatory Support: Coordinate and complete tax-related processes, including tax credit documentation and required filings, ensuring adherence to deadlines and regulatory requirements.
- Process Improvement & Collaboration: Identify and implement process improvements to strengthen efficiency, accuracy, and audit readiness, while partnering with internal teams and external stakeholders to support financial reporting and operational initiatives.
Experience
- Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in accounting; CPA preferred. Minimum of 5 years of relevant accounting experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Financial Acumen: Applies advanced financial principles to drive informed decision-making, ensuring accuracy and strategic alignment across business functions. Tracks, synthesizes and maintains complex data streams effectively.
- Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including Power Query, pivot tables, and formulas) and the ability to quickly learn new software and systems.
- Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills with knowledge of accounting concepts. Skilled at building professional relationships and effectively communicating with internal and external stakeholders.
- Analytical Ability: Skilled at interpreting complex instructions and documentation, solving problems, and drawing valid conclusions.
- Collaboration & Initiative: Able to work both independently and collaboratively, respond effectively to sensitive inquiries, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work regularly at a computer in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to work in an office with moderate noise levels and communicate detailed information effectively.
