Position Overview
A well-established construction and real estate development organization is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join its growing finance team. Reporting to the CFO, the Senior Accountant will play a key role in managing financial reporting, month-end processes, project accounting, and maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the company's financial records.
This position is ideal for a CPA or CPA-designated professional with experience in the construction, real estate, or development industry who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements.
- Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts while ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
- Assist with project and job cost accounting, including tracking project budgets, costs, and profitability.
- Prepare and analyze work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and project reporting.
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit facilities, and intercompany transactions.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning initiatives.
- Assist with GST/HST filings and other regulatory reporting requirements.
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions during year-end audits and reviews.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, internal controls, and reporting efficiencies.
- Provide financial analysis and reporting to support operational and strategic decision-making.
- Mentor junior accounting staff and provide guidance on accounting procedures as needed.
Qualifications
- CPA designation required (or actively completing final stages of the CPA program with significant relevant experience).
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Previous experience within the construction, real estate development, or property management industry is highly preferred.
- Strong understanding of project accounting, job costing, and financial reporting.
- Experience with month-end and year-end close processes.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with ERP/accounting systems such as Sage, Jonas, Viewpoint, or similar accounting software is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
