The Assistant Controller / Senior Accountant plays a key role in supporting the Controller and ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of day-to-day accounting operations at MacKay Contracting Ltd.
This role is highly hands-on and focused on transactional integrity across aggregates operations, inventory, and job costing, while also providing oversight and support to Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable functions. The position will act as a critical bridge between operations and accounting, ensuring data is captured accurately and supports reliable financial reporting.
Responsibilities & Duties:
This role is primarily focused on execution, data integrity, and operational accounting support.
Aggregates, Inventory & Job Costing:
- Manage and maintain aggregates accounting, including inventory tracking, costing, and reconciliation
- Ensure accurate and timely entry of production, sales, and inventory movements
- Oversee job cost allocations, ensuring costs are coded correctly and consistently
- Work closely with operations to ensure data is captured properly at source
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies in job costing and inventory balances
Day-to-Day Accounting Operations:
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations
- Maintain general ledger integrity and ensure proper coding across all transactions
- Assist with month-end close processes, including supporting schedules and working papers
AR & AP Oversight (Support Role):
- Provide oversight and support to AR and AP functions alongside the Controller
- Monitor collections, aging, and vendor balances, flagging issues as they arise
- Assist with resolving discrepancies, approvals, and process improvements
- Ensure purchase order and invoicing processes are being followed
Payroll & Administrative Support:
- Provide backup support for payroll processing as needed
- Assist with benefits tracking, accruals, and related reconciliations
Reporting & Data Integrity:
- Support the Controller in preparing weekly and monthly reporting
- Ensure underlying data is complete, accurate, and aligned with reporting requirements
- Assist in maintaining cash flow tracking inputs and supporting schedules
Systems & Process Improvement:
- Work within Trimble Viewpoint Spectrum to maintain accurate system data
- Identify opportunities to improve workflows, data capture, and efficiency
- Assist with ongoing system optimization and process standardization
Qualifications & Skills:
- 3–7 years of accounting experience, ideally in construction, aggregates, or a project-based environment
- Strong experience with job costing, inventory, and high-volume transactional environments
- Experience with Trimble Viewpoint Spectrum is a strong asset
- Solid understanding of general accounting principles (ASPE knowledge beneficial but not required at a deep technical level)
- High attention to detail and strong data integrity mindset
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Comfortable working in a hands-on, operational role
- Strong communication skills, particularly in working with operations teams
- CPA designation or working towards designation is an asset but not required
