POSITION PURPOSE
The Accounting Department plays a critical role in maintaining the financial integrity of Johns Hopkins Federal Credit Union by ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and sound financial stewardship. The team is responsible for managing the general ledger, financial close process, account reconciliations, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, budgeting support, financial analysis, and regulatory and audit reporting.
As a key business partner across the organization, the Accounting Department collaborates closely with departments including Finance, Lending, Operations, Information Technology, Human Resources, Compliance, Risk Management, and Vendor Management to support strategic initiatives, system implementations, product launches, process improvements, and day-to-day operational activities. The department serves as a trusted resource for financial guidance and decision-making, helping leaders understand the financial impact of business activities while ensuring adherence to accounting standards, internal controls, and regulatory requirements. Through a commitment to accuracy, efficiency, and continuous improvement, the Accounting team helps support the Credit Union's mission of delivering exceptional value and service to its members.
The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing and directing accounting functions, including general ledger, prepaid, fixed asset, and ATM accounting. Additionally, this role prepares periodic reports, reviews and reconciles data, and participates in the development of specialized financial data and oversees, prepares entries, and adjustments to Credit Union records, files, and statements. The Senior Accountant assists with financial and variance analyses, budget preparation, provides managers with information necessary for decision-making, and assists in training personnel. As needed, the Senior Accountant acts as the lead Accountant in the absence of the Accounting Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

RESPONSIBILITIES:
ACCOUNTING FUNCTIONS
- Ensures the accurate, timely, and effective completion of accounting activities in compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Prepares journal entries and balances work in more complicated accounting areas.
- Oversees and prepares the balancing of various subsidiary ledgers such as ATM, Fixed Assets and Prepaids, etc.
- Oversees and prepares the balancing of various subsidiary ledgers to processor reports.
- Researches and resolves accounting errors, reconciliation exceptions, and general ledger discrepancies. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to identify root causes, ensure timely resolution, and maintain the integrity of financial records and reporting.
- Reviews and maintains reporting to various agencies such as Unclaimed Property and the IRS.
- Ensures that accounting functions are completed in accordance with established procedures and applicable regulations.
- Supports the Accounts Payable function as needed.
TEAM SUPPORT & DEVELOPMENT
- Assists in the cross training of the Accounting staff in all essential functions to insure the continuity of the departmental workflow.
- Ensures staff is providing quality member service through observation and member feedback, and provide coaching when appropriate.
- In the absence of the Accounting Manager, communicates any new and/or updated policies and procedures to department staff.
BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS
- Establishes and Maintains effective business relationships with venders, governmental agencies and outside business and accounting professionals.
- Responds to questions and problems politely and promptly.
- Ensures that outside contacts are properly informed.
- Ensures that the Credit Union’s professional reputation is projected and maintained.
COMMUNICATION & COORDINATION
- Assists area personnel as needed.
- Maintains regular contact with other departments to obtain information and/or to correct transactions.
- Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant problems or concerns.
- Maintains confidentiality.
OTHER DUTIES
- Remains compliant with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to BSA and the USA Patriot Act
- Responsible for any additional duties and/or responsibilities as assigned.
- Stays informed of developments in the accounting field and of changing governmental and legal requirements.
- Ensures compliance with Credit Union standards and makes recommendations as needed.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
A minimum of five (5) years accounting experience.
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Technical knowledge of accounting concepts, practices, procedures, and financial reports.
Understanding of related regulations, statutes, and filing requirements.
Knowledge of related computer applications.
Knowledge of Credit Union operations.
This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule. The ability to work in a hybrid work arrangement is based on work performance and the ability to create and maintain engaging work relationships.
