Rainy River
Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River mine is an open pit and underground, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.
The Rainy River mine, located adjacent to the Ontario/Minnesota border is 65 kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. If you enjoy outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, winter sports and lake country then this is an area you will love to live and work in.
Applicants who reside in Northwestern Ontario and have experience working in a cross-cultural environment, coupled with knowledge of the unique challenges and opportunities presented to those living in the Northwest Ontario, are assets. About the Role
Schedule: 5 days in / 2 days off with opportunity for remote work
Reporting to: Accounting Superintendent
Location: Emo, Ontario
Position Objective
The Senior Accountant supports the site finance function by performing accounting, reporting, and cost control activities in a mining operation environment. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate financial records, supporting the month-end close process, and providing insight into operational and capital costs.
The Senior Accountant acts as a key backup to the Accounting Superintendent and provides guidance and support to the accounting team, particularly in SAP and process-related matters. The role works closely with operations, supply chain, and corporate finance teams to deliver timely, accurate, and compliant financial information, while contributing to continuous process improvement at site.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Close
- Support the month-end close activities, including preparation of journal entries, accruals, and reclassifications
- Assist with quarterly close and corporate reporting requirements, including preparation of working papers and site financial statements
- Perform and review account reconciliations (general ledger, bank, and sub-ledgers) and investigate variances
- Maintain accuracy, completeness, and audit readiness of financial records and supporting documentation
- Support internal and external audit processes and provide required documentation
- Support maintenance of SOX working papers and internal control documentation, ensuring completeness and accuracy
- Execute control activities in accordance with established processes and escalate issues or deficiencies as identified
- Ensure assigned work complies with company policies, procedures, and US GAAP requirements
- Collaborate with the Fixed Asset Accountant to ensure appropriate accounting treatment of capital expenditures and alignment with site financial reporting
Systems, Process & Team Support
- Provide SAP support to the accounting team
- Support improvements in SAP processes, reporting structures, and data integrity
- Identify and implement opportunities to automate processes and improve efficiency (working papers, reporting, reconciliations)
- Assist in testing and implementation of system or process changes
Leadership & Team Support
- Assist in reviewing accounting work (journal entries, reconciliations) to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Support and mentor team members on accounting processes and systems
- Collaborate effectively across departments to resolve financial and operational issues
- Act as primary backup to the Accounting Superintendent, supporting oversight of close, reporting, and team coordination
General
- Maintain accurate general ledger activity and supporting records
- Support finance team initiatives and continuous improvement projects
- Perform ad hoc analysis and tasks as assigned
Qualifications
- Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA designation (or working towards) considered an asset
- Minimum 4-6 years of accounting experience, preferably in mining or heavy industry
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting
Key Skills & Competencies
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Advanced Excel skills; SAP experience preferred (S/4HANA an asset)
- Knowledge of cost accounting and project accounting
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to support and guide team members on systems and processes
- Proactive, self-motivated, with a continuous improvement mindset
Compensation
The anticipated salary range for this position will be between $95,000.00 - $115,000.00.
