Key ResponsibilitiesSales & Use Tax Advisory
- Serve as a technical resource and trusted advisor on Sales & Use Tax matters for clients across various industries.
- Conduct research on complex state and local tax issues and develop well-supported technical memoranda, analyses, and recommendations.
- Evaluate multi-state sales tax obligations and advise clients on compliance requirements and risk exposure.
- Review exemption certificates and related documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance.
- Participate in transaction due diligence efforts by assessing indirect tax implications related to mergers, acquisitions, and restructurings.
- Identify potential tax exposures, liabilities, and planning opportunities during acquisition reviews.
- Advise clients on post-transaction indirect tax compliance considerations and integration requirements.
- Review Sales & Use Tax filings to ensure accuracy, timely submission, and adherence to applicable regulations.
- Assist clients with voluntary disclosure agreements, nexus studies, registrations, and related compliance initiatives.
- Analyze and respond to state tax notices, audit inquiries, and other regulatory correspondence.
- Act as a liaison between clients and state or local tax authorities to resolve tax matters effectively.
- Leverage tax technology solutions, including:
- Avalara
- Vertex
- TaxJar
- Comparable indirect tax automation platforms
- Identify opportunities to enhance tax processes, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen compliance controls.
- Support the implementation and optimization of tax technology solutions to streamline reporting and compliance activities.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 6 years of progressive experience within State & Local Tax (SALT).
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated expertise in:
- Sales & Use Tax
- Indirect tax compliance
- Multi-state tax regulations
- Tax research, analysis, and technical interpretation
- Professional certification required:
- CPA, JD/LLM, CMI, or equivalent credential
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
- Proven ability to build client relationships and manage complex tax engagements from planning through execution.
- Prior experience within public accounting, consulting, or professional services environments.
- Experience supporting M&A transactions, including tax due diligence and transaction advisory services.
- Hands-on experience with sales tax automation and compliance platforms.
- Strong project management capabilities with a client-focused advisory approach.
- Experienced SALT professional with extensive knowledge of Sales & Use Tax regulations and compliance requirements.
- Confident advisor who thrives in a client-facing environment and can communicate technical tax concepts effectively.
- Analytical thinker with strong research skills and the ability to interpret evolving state and local tax legislation.
