Overview
Stellar Virtual is seeking a detail-oriented Revenue Accountant to own our revenue cycle. You will ensure that our top-line numbers are accurate, compliant, and properly recognized. This role is critical for maintaining our financial integrity as we grow. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in US GAAP, specifically ASC 606, and enjoys optimizing accounting workflows in a fast-paced, digital environment.
Essential Duties
- Revenue Recognition: Review customer contracts to determine appropriate revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606.
- Month-End Close: Prepare revenue-related journal entries, reconcile deferred revenue, and calculate accounts receivable reserves during the month-end close process.
- Reporting & Analysis: Generate monthly revenue reports, investigate discrepancies, and perform analytical reviews of revenue and gross margin trends.
- Process Improvement: Identify bottlenecks in the order-to-cash process and help implement automation or system enhancements within our billing platform.
- Audit Support: Serve as a primary point of contact for external auditors regarding revenue testing, providing schedules, contract documentation, and process walkthroughs.
- Research: Provide research into funding opportunities by state to ensure all federal, state and local education funding has been utilized to enhance revenue.
- Modeling: Update current state revenue Excel models and create models for new states to calculate revenue based on enrollment, retention and academic achievement.
Knowledge, Skills & Attributes
- 3+ years of accounting experience, with a heavy focus on revenue recognition (SaaS or digital services industry experience is a major plus).
- Strong understanding of US GAAP and ASC 606 standards, with a specific ability to interpret complex, non-standard contract language.
- Proven experience working independently with minimal supervision, including the ability to manage a digital task list and maintain a stable remote (home-office) infrastructure.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex ideas via written channels (Email, Google Chat, and Document Comments) with high clarity and low ambiguity.
- Access to a private, secure, high-speed internet connection with a minimum of 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speeds.
- Proficiency with advanced Excel functions and experience with enterprise accounting software and billing systems (e.g., Salesforce, Stripe, NetSuite).
- Exceptional organizational skills and an uncompromising eye for detail.
Success Profile
- Revenue Recognition Expertise: Applies ASC 606 principles to accurately analyze contracts and ensure correct revenue recognition and financial reporting.
- Analytical Precision and Contract Interpretation: Reviews complex, non-standard customer contracts to identify billing terms, revenue schedules, and financial implications.
- Cross-Functional Financial Collaboration: Partners effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders to resolve discrepancies and ensure accurate invoicing and reporting.
Education & Certification Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
- CPA or path to CPA is strongly preferred.
