This is a 10-Week Contract Position (Temporary)
We're looking for someone with 5+ years of experience in multi-state payroll tax compliance and employer registrations.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Payroll Tax Consultant supports the organization's payroll functions by ensuring payroll tax accounts are established, maintained, and compliant with applicable laws and regulations. This position will support the company's third-party payroll services provider and assist with a multi-state payroll tax account cleanup project, including employer payroll tax registrations, resolving accounts in "Applied For" status, obtaining state withholding and unemployment account numbers, and maintaining payroll tax compliance. This position reports to the Payroll Supervisor and is expected to last approximately 10 weeks.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supports compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax laws, employer registrations, and reporting requirements
Supports the company's third-party payroll services provider
Supports the timely resolution of payroll tax issues escalated from the third-party payroll services provider
Researches registration requirements and completes employer payroll tax registrations
Supports new state payroll tax registrations and account setup as business needs arise
Researches, resolves, and follows up on accounts in "Applied For" status
Obtains state withholding and unemployment account numbers
Maintains state payroll tax accounts and updates account information as needed
Works directly with state agencies to resolve registration inquiries, notices, and payroll tax account issues
Researches and resolves payroll tax notices, registration issues, agency correspondence, and account discrepancies
Maintains payroll tax records and supporting documentation
Collaborates with Payroll, Human Resources, Finance, the third-party payroll services provider, and state agencies
Complies with internal payroll policies and procedures
Completes other tasks and duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or equivalent required
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
Minimum 5 years of payroll tax experience, preferably in a multi-state environment
Experience completing employer payroll tax registrations, maintaining state payroll tax accounts, and resolving accounts in "Applied For" status
Experience obtaining state withholding and unemployment account numbers and resolving payroll tax notices, account discrepancies, and agency correspondence
Experience working directly with state taxing agencies
Experience with Workday Payroll or other cloud-based payroll systems preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of basic accounting principles and multi-state payroll tax laws, employer registration requirements, and reporting requirements
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an emphasis on customer service
Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate effectively across departments
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
Proficient in Microsoft Office products
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Includes a typical remote office environment, with minimal exposure to excessive noise or adverse environmental issues.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time
Ability to work on a computer throughout the majority of the day, as tasks require
Ability to use and speak on the phone or via teleconference, as needed throughout the day
