    Payroll Specialist � RSU #57

    Regional School Unit #57 is searching for a highly motivated full-time Payroll Specialist to join our Business Office team. The successful candidate should be detail oriented, be able to multi-task, and have excellent communication and math skills. The position is a salaried, year-round position. 

    RSU #57 is a public school district located in southern Maine and educates students from the towns of Alfred, Limerick, Lyman, Newfield, Shapleigh, and Waterboro. The school district has approximately 3,000 students and approximately 600 staff members.

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

    The Payroll Specialist will perform the tasks of processing payroll, managing employee records, and ensuring prompt payment of payroll vendor invoices. The essential job duties of the Payroll Specialist are as follows:

    • Perform daily payroll procedures, including review and entry of time and attendance forms and timely filing of all paperwork.
    • Ensure that all payroll transactions are processed accurately and timely.
    • Preparation, reconciliation, and timely filing of all payroll reports (bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually).
    • Work closely with Human Resources to update employee records for new employees, retirements, separations from service, benefit elections, pay rate changes, general ledger allocations, and changes in employee information.
    • Communicate with employees in a respectful, professional, and timely manner.
    • Assist with audit preparation as needed.
    • Process workers' compensation claims through the district's insurance carrier.
    • Prepare payment for vendor benefits and withholding taxes.
    • Perform and review the input of electronic time records to ensure proper payroll for hourly employees.
    • Assist employees and supervisors with periodic training to ensure proper payroll compliance.
    • Update and maintain databases to reflect personnel updates and changes.
    • Research payroll discrepancies and process necessary corrections.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance & Operations.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • Working knowledge of payroll best practices.
    • Strong knowledge of federal and state payroll regulations.
    • Strong computer skills, including Excel and Word.
    • Experience with Frontline and Tyler Technologies Profund software is preferred but not required.
    • Ability to deal with sensitive and confidential information.
    • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to understand and apply current payroll laws and payroll procedures.
    • Extensive attention to detail and strong math skills.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

    • Bachelor's degree in Business or Accounting preferred but not required.
    • 5+ years payroll processing experience desired but not required.
    • Combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Light physical effort may be required.
