Ergon Inc. seeks a full-time Payroll Lead to join our Human Resources team. The Payroll Lead requires highly developed logical thinking skills, collaborative, detail-oriented payroll professional with strong technical expertise and a passion for process excellence. The Payroll Lead is responsible for leading the day-to-day execution of multi-state payroll operations while ensuring payroll is processed accurately, timely, and in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This role serves as the subject matter expert for payroll processing, payroll tax compliance, and payroll systems, providing operational leadership, driving continuous process improvements, and supporting exceptional service to employees and internal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end payroll process for employees across all 50 states, ensuring payroll is processed accurately and on schedule.
- Review and validate payroll transactions, including earnings, deductions, taxes, garnishments, retroactive adjustments, and off-cycle payrolls.
- Monitor payroll exceptions, reconciliations, and payroll tax calculations to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for complex payroll inquiries and resolve payroll issues in a timely and professional manner.
- Act as the functional subject matter expert for SuccessFactors Employee Central, SAP Employee Central Payroll (ECP), UKG Timekeeping, and related payroll applications.
- Support payroll system testing, validation, interface monitoring, troubleshooting, system enhancements, implementations, payroll conversions, mergers and acquisitions, and year-end processing activities.
- Identify opportunities to streamline payroll processes, improve efficiencies, enhance internal controls, and leverage automation.
- Partner closely with Human Resources, HRIS, Benefits, Finance, and business leaders to ensure seamless payroll operations and exceptional employee service.
- Assist in developing and maintaining payroll procedures, documentation, and best practices.
- Stay current on payroll legislation and regulatory changes to ensure ongoing compliance.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant payroll experience.
- Four or more years of progressive experience processing complex multi-state payrolls.
- Demonstrated experience processing payroll across all 50 states.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations and payroll compliance requirements.
- Experience with payroll accounting, reconciliations, and payroll reporting.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting strict payroll deadlines.
- Preferred experience with SuccessFactors Employee Central, SAP Employee Central Payroll (ECP), UKG Timekeeping, and Payroll Control Center.
