Paper Trails is a Maine-based payroll, HR, and human capital management firm serving small and mid-sized businesses across New England. We're looking for a Payroll & HCM Specialist to own a portfolio of 150–200 small business clients - processing their payrolls, handling tax filings, and being the friendly expert they call when something gets tricky.
What you'll do
You'll process weekly payrolls for your client portfolio and serve as their go-to expert on payroll, tax, and compliance questions. You'll configure and support isolved features like timekeeping, onboarding, benefits administration, and custom reporting. You'll manage multi-state tax filings, garnishments, retirement contributions, and unemployment verifications - and deliver the kind of responsive, human service that makes clients tell their friends about us.
What we're looking for
- This position is based in our Kennebunk, ME office, with remote flexibility available after the probationary period.
- 2–3+ years of payroll processing experience, ideally in a service bureau or multi-client environment
- Strong working knowledge of federal, state, and multi-state payroll tax and wage-and-hour law
- Experience with isolved or comparable HCM/payroll platforms (ADP, Paychex, Paylocity, Paycom, UKG, etc.) strongly preferred
- Background in accounting, business, or finance (degree preferred)
- FPC or CPP certification preferred
- Confident with Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel
- Clear written and verbal communicator who can explain a complex tax issue in plain English
- Trustworthy with confidential client and employee financial information
What we offer
- Salary $27–31/hour based on experience, plus additional compensation for advanced certifications
- Annual bonuses and profit sharing based on company performance
- 100% company-paid health, dental, vision, and short/long-term disability (employee)
- 3% 401(k) company contribution regardless of employee contribution
- Unlimited PTO + all federal holidays
- Shortened Friday schedule (8:30–noon); Mon–Thu 8:30–4:00
