Who we are
You know those big cities that still feel like small towns? Where everyone’s friendly and helps each other out? That’s like Doane Grant Thornton. Except here we’re all professionals and there isn’t a mayor or a general store. What we’re trying to say is that we’re a large and growing professional services firm that still feels like a community. We employ about 3000 people across Canada, and we truly care about our colleagues, our clients and the communities where we work and live. That’s what’s most important to us. We’re building a thriving organization that’s purpose driven and still want to remember what your favourite milkshake flavour is.
Why join our Indigenous Services practice?
This is an opportunity to help grow a distinct and purposeful area of practice within the firm. You will work with a collaborative team that is building trusted, culturally informed relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations across British Columbia and beyond. The work is varied, meaningful, and often connected to community growth, business formation, governance, land and resource opportunities, intergenerational planning, and reconciliation in practice. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to thought leadership, participate in sector events, support internal education, and help shape how Doane Grant Thornton delivers integrated Assurance, Tax, and Advisory services in the Indigenous sector.
This Manager role is part of Doane Grant Thornton’s growing Indigenous Services focus and is designed for someone who wants to build a meaningful practice serving Indigenous clients. The successful candidate will work with First Nations governments, Indigenous-owned businesses, Economic Development Corporations, Indigenous non-profits, entrepreneurs, and organizations working alongside Indigenous communities. The role combines strong Canadian tax technical skills with practical business judgment, cultural awareness, and a genuine interest in supporting Indigenous economic development, governance, and long-term community priorities.
As a Manager in Indigenous Domestic Tax, your responsibilities will include:
- Advising First Nations governments, Indigenous-owned businesses, Economic Development Corporations, Indigenous entrepreneurs, Indigenous non-profits, and partnerships with non-Indigenous businesses on tax planning, compliance, structuring, and implementation matters
- Analyzing, planning and implementing the reorganizations of companies and other assets, including the purchase and sale of businesses
- Supporting Indigenous economic development through advice on corporate and partnership structures, joint ventures, asset acquisitions, real estate and land development matters, financing considerations, and long-term business lifecycle planning
- Helping clients navigate Indigenous-specific tax considerations, including Indian Act section 87, paragraph 149(1)(c) public body exemption issues, treaty-related changes, estate and intergenerational planning, and governance of community-owned entities
- Building trusted, culturally informed relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations by taking time to understand each client’s governance structure, community priorities, capacity needs, and vision for sustainable growth
- Collaborating with Assurance, Advisory, Indirect Tax, and other specialists to deliver integrated support for Indigenous clients, including governance, internal controls, funding, financial reporting, strategic planning, and capacity-building initiatives
- Contributing to the growth of Doane Grant Thornton’s Indigenous Services Group by identifying opportunities, sharing knowledge, supporting thought leadership, participating in community and sector events, and helping colleagues connect Indigenous opportunities with the appropriate sector specialists
- Overseeing multiple client engagements across various industries
- Providing significant input into broader innovations for the service line to anticipate clients’ requirements
- Assisting business development management for target industries and sectors and supporting client business requirements in new and innovative ways
- Participating in the overall development of the Doane Grant Thornton brand through internal and external activities and knowledge of industry
- Coaching more junior tax team members and ensuring a meaningful performance review process
- Leveraging technical proficiency to advise and guide team members at lower levels
- Attending client and stakeholder meetings with the Tax team
- Assisting the Partners and Senior Managers with strategy and implementation of strategy
- Preparing and reviewing files for Partners
- Identifying and generating new business opportunities
- Being an active part of the professional services community
