The Opportunity
The Accounting Manager, Property Operations, leads the Shared Services team and ensures timely, accurate accounting for designated non-controllable expenses. The role also oversees financial reporting, analysis, and accounting for development projects, ensuring the reliability and timeliness of financial information. This position partners closely with Finance, Operations, Development, and external stakeholders to support effective decision-making.
Key AccountabilitiesBased on Chartwell Retirement Residences’ business plan and corporate goals, and in consultation with the Director Operations Finance, the Accounting Manager, Property Operations is expected to lead a team of professionals and will be responsible for:
- Oversee accounting and financial reporting for development projects.
- Ensure proper accounting treatment for development costs.
- Maintain compliance with internal controls, corporate policies, and audit requirements.
- Prepare supporting documentation for internal and external audits.
- Review of the accounting for the property level noncontrollable expenses.
- Collaborate with other members of the Finance and Payroll team to participate in timely month-end and year-end close process.
- Timely communication of financial results, including variance analysis and reconciliation of accounts under the responsibility of Shared Services, developing reports that meet the needs of internal/external customers.
- Review and approve payroll journal entries.
- Assist with coordinating, completion and review of the property operating budgets, working collaboratively with the Operations Teams.
- Assists with completion and review of forecasts and providing consolidated analysis of same.
- Identifies and recommends areas for improvements in the finance department and provides oversight into the implementation of these improvements.
- Communicate effectively with Senior Management, Operations, Property Accountants, other Finance team members and external third parties.
- Directly supervise and mentor team members in the finance area.
- Motivate team and lead by example.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education:
- University degree (Business/Finance related)
- Enrolled in or possesses a CPA designation (CA, CGA, CMA) or equivalent work experience.
Experience:
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally with exposure to real estate development, acquisitions.
- Related industry experience (preferred)
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of IFRS and Canadian GAAP (required)
- Strong computer skills – Microsoft Office (required). Intermediate to Advanced Excel (required)
- Public company experience (preferred)
- Knowledge of industry specific accounting principles (preferred)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Self-motivated, creative, and reliable
- French/English Bilingualism is an asset
- Irregular hours may be required.
