Overview: The Manager, Accounting serves as a functional leader, overseeing the financial reporting and regulatory compliance of the credit union. The is accountable for managing financial and regulatory reporting, internal controls, technical accounting, and ensuring adherence to regulatory standards. This position plays a critical leadership role ensuring a high performing team that is continually maximizing efficiency with a positive impact on the financial health of the credit union while providing excellent service to its stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
General Accounting and Reporting:
- Direct and maintain accountability for the month-end close process, monthly reporting and variance analysis, quarterly Call Reports, and general ledger account reconciliation reviews.
- Keeping internal financial records, generating reports, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, tax returns, , supporting the planning process as it pertains to non-interest income and expense (NIIE), general ledger maintenance, monthly book close, GL account reconciliation reviews etc.
- Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures and accounting memos.
- Manage the monthly Allowance for Credit Losses (ACL) process ensuring the process is compliant with GAAP. Expert knowledge of ASC 326 (CECL).
- Supervise the maintenance of fixed asset records and depreciation schedules and lease accounting records in accordance with accounting policies. Expert knowledge of ASC 842 (Lease Accounting).
- Provide accounting leadership and decision-support for strategic initiatives, including new products and services.
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
- Present financial reports to senior management highlighting key financial metrics and trends.
Internal Controls and Compliance:
- Own the accounting control framework and ensure effectiveness of internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements in collaboration with Risk, Legal and Compliance as needed
- Conduct regular reviews of financial processes and procedures to identify areas for improvement and mitigate risks.
- Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures. Stay abreast of changes in accounting standards and regulatory guidelines, implementing necessary adjustments to ensure compliance.
Audit Management:
- Serve as a Accounting department leader and point of contact for financial audits, internal audits, and regulatory examinations, providing documentation and explanations as needed.
- Lead the development and execution of corrective action plans and process improvements resulting from audit findings, regulatory examinations, and control assessments.
Other Responsibilities:
- Serve as a subject matter expert on all accounting software tools used by the Accounting department, as appropriate (ProfitStars, Prologue, nCino, Concur, LeaseQuery, Fed Reporter, Symitar and related modules)
- Oversee the month-end close, management reporting and provide audit support for the MCU Foundation.
- Review and ensure application of appropriate internal controls, compliance and financial procedures.
- Monitor key financial metrics and performance indicators, analyzing trends and identifying areas for improvement or risk mitigation.
- Provide all deliverables in accordance with prescribed timelines.
- Assist with projects, working collaboratively with other departments and meeting all deadlines.
Perform other related duties as requested and special projects as assigned
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field required; MBA or CPA with a ‘Big Four’ or public accounting experience strongly preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a minimum of 4 years in an accounting leadership (manager or higher) position at a similarly sized bank or credit union.
- In-depth knowledge of GAAP, regulatory compliance, and financial reporting requirements for financial institutions.
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to analyze complex financial data and draw actionable insights.
- Proven leadership abilities, with experience managing teams and driving results in a collaborative environment.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate accounting concepts to diverse audiences and influence decision-making processes.
- Strategic mindset and forward-thinking approach, with the ability to anticipate challenges and develop proactive solutions.
- Proficiency in financial software and Microsoft Excel; experience with banking systems such as Symitar core banking platforms is a plus.
- Demonstrated success in planning, organizing, leading people and activities. Ability to motivate, direct and coach staff.
- Ability to perform in a high-volume environment and meet deadlines while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.

The pay range for this position is between $148,300-185,000 annually. Actual base pay offered may vary depending on a number of factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary bonus, 401(k) with an 6% employer match per pay period. Benefits for this position include Medical, vision, dental, life, and disability insurance, flexible paid time off and 11 paid holidays annually.
