Project Accountant – Government Contractor
Position Overview
The Project Accountant manages the financial lifecycle of government contracts, ensuring accurate tracking of labor, direct and indirect costs, revenue recognition, cost accruals, and compliance with FAR/DFARS requirements. This role supports month-end close, prepares budgets and forecasts, and reviews P&L statements against projections.
The Project Accountant serves as a key financial liaison to Program Management, Operations, and Finance, providing audit-ready reporting, variance analysis, and guidance for effective project financial management. The position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities

Oversee revenue recognition and ensure compliance with accounting standards and contract requirements.

Track and reconcile project costs, including labor, direct/indirect expenses, and cost accruals.

Support month-end close and preparation of accurate financial reports.

Develop, review, and analyze budgets, forecasts, and P&L statements, comparing actuals to projections.

Manage project accounting for government contracts, ensuring compliance with FAR, DFARS, and internal policies.

Maintain audit-ready project documentation and support internal/external audits (e.g., DCAA).

Collaborate with Program Management, HR, and Operations to validate labor charges, indirect rates, and cost allocations.

Generate and reconcile ERP reports (e.g., Deltek Costpoint, NetSuite, JAMIS) for project financials.

Provide guidance on project accounting processes, financial compliance, and reporting best practices.

Identify process improvements and contribute to SOP development.
Required Qualifications

Associates’ degree in Accounting, Finance, related field or equivalent experience.

3+ years of accounting experience, including at least 2 years in government contract accounting.

Experience with revenue recognition, cost accruals, month-end close, budgets, forecasts, and P&L review.

Knowledge of FAR, DFARS, and cost accounting standards.

Proficiency with ERP systems (e.g., Deltek Costpoint, NetSuite, JAMIS).

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and reconciliation skills.

Ability to manage multiple projects under strict deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience supporting DCAA or federal audits.

Familiarity with Earned Value Management (EVM).

Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, complex reporting).

Experience in multi-site or multi-contract environments.

Project Accountant (3–5 years government project accounting experience)
Responsibilities:
