General Position Summary The Investment Accountant promotes effective investment accounting and reporting information by applying appropriate accounting and reporting principles and practices in partnership with internal and external customers to achieve the Organization’s goals.  This position requires foundational knowledge for all types of investments appropriate for insurance companies including bonds, stocks, mortgage loans, real estate and other invested assets. Prepares certain statutory quarterly and annual financial statement schedules and exhibits with an emphasis on the Mortgage, Real Estate and Other Invested Asset related reports.  Processes acquisitions, payments and disposals for all mortgage loans, real estate and other long-term assets.  Processes depreciation for all real estate, performs a variety of routine and some non-routine accounting functions in accordance with developed procedures for all investment related activity to ensure that the Organization’s investments are properly accounted for and in compliance with regulatory and statutory accounting requirements.

Essential Job Functions

Processes accounting and performs record keeping functions for all real estate, mortgage loan and other long-term assets in accordance with established procedures.  This includes modal payments, disposals, maturities, acquisitions and capitalized improvements.  Prepares monthly depreciation for all real estate records and maintains all records associated with that process.  Pays all real estate taxes and ensures that properties have been adequately insured. Serves as primary backup for the Financial Accountant, performing accounting and record keeping functions for securities (bonds, stocks, mutual funds, hybrid securities, derivatives) in accordance with established procedures.  Reconciles related general ledger accounts with their investment administration system and performs other account analysis.  Includes the ability to prepare the related exhibits and schedules for the statutory quarterly and annual statements, separate accounts statement and other internal financial reports in the absence of the Financial Accountant. Prepares financial reporting exhibits and schedules for the statutory quarterly and annual statements. Prepares mortgage and real estate related schedules for the organization’s internal and external audits and examinations and drafts responses to questions regarding those schedules. Reconciles a variety of general ledger accounts, real estate operating reports and invested asset activity, performs other analysis and reports on the same.

Processes morning Unit Value Trade transactions in accordance with established procedures and updates various variable annuity balance control sheets.  Maintains and coordinates the morning trade calendar for appropriate staffing.  Performs daily FTP upload of certain vital records of the Variable Annuity, subsidiaries and Foundation for business resumption purposes. Prepares reports for certain state insurance departments, regulatory agencies, rating agencies or external users of the statutory quarterly and annual statements.  Process includes analyzing product statistics (certificates in force, premium, claims, etc.) on a state-by-state basis, obtaining necessary signatures, notarized documents, preparing cover letters and ensuring compliance by the proscribed due dates.  Also maintains an Access database that houses the state filing requirements. Develops software testing procedures, documents and communicates them verbally and in writing. Tests and implements general releases, enhancements and program corrections for PLM-Mortgages software.  Communicates within the department, Investment Division and the application provider with respect to problem resolution. Meets expectations for attendance and punctuality in accordance with the expectations established by manager and WoodmenLife policy. Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications

This job requires a background that demonstrates the following minimum knowledge, skills, talents and traits:

Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance or commensurate experience preferred. Five years investment accounting and/or statutory accounting experience preferred. Understanding of investment accounting and reporting principles and best practices for securities, mortgages and real estate, including mortgage participations and securitizations. Strong analytical skills with a high attention to detail. Proficient use of MS Office (Excel, Word, Access, Powerpoint). Proficient use of PAM for Investments, PrecisionLM, PAM-Unit Value Trade and Lawson – Asset Manager investment administration and accounting systems. Ability to quickly learn other software systems (Impromptu, TCP, UVT) and resolve problems that arise. Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment where priorities can change frequently and deadlines are often under significant time pressure, while maintaining an effective approach. Ability to work hours needed to achieve business results. Ability to display strong customer service skills and effectively communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
