About the Role
As an International Tax Director, you’ll be responsible for providing technical leadership and oversight of the Firm’s international tax compliance, planning, consulting, and advisory services. You’ll play a vital role in managing client relationships, engagement execution, team development, and practice expansion. You’ll collaborate with partners and leaders to align growth opportunities with firm capabilities and contribute to the long-term strategy of the international tax practice.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and oversee complex U.S. international tax engagements, including planning, compliance, provision, consulting, and advisory projects for multinational corporations, partnerships, individuals, trusts, and other entities.
- Review and oversee U.S. federal, state, and international tax compliance, including Forms 1120, 1120-S, 1065, 1040, 1040-NR, and related schedules and disclosures, ensuring accuracy, technical quality, and timely completion.
- Review and oversee international information reporting and related calculations, including Forms 5471, 5472, 926, 1118, 8621, 8858, 8865, 8990, 8991, 8992, 8993, and other applicable international tax forms and disclosures.
- Review and oversee individual international tax compliance, including Forms 1116, 2555, 3520/3520-A, 8854, 8938, FinCEN Form 114 (FBAR), and applicable IRS streamlined filing procedures.
- Provide technical guidance on complex international tax matters, including foreign corporations, controlled foreign corporations (CFCs), passive foreign investment companies (PFICs), foreign partnerships, foreign trusts, foreign tax credits, Subpart F, GILTI, BEAT, treaty considerations, withholding requirements, and other applicable international tax provisions.
- Identify and implement tax planning opportunities for clients, including cross-border structuring, foreign investment, repatriation, tax-efficient ownership structures, foreign tax credit planning, and other international tax matters.
- Conduct and oversee tax research, analyze complex tax issues, and prepare technical memoranda, client correspondence, presentations, and other deliverables communicating conclusions and recommendations.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, developing a thorough understanding of their businesses, ownership structures, international activities, and tax objectives and proactively identifying opportunities, risks, and compliance requirements.
- Manage and oversee multiple international tax engagements, including planning, budgeting, staffing, scheduling, execution, and delivery, while maintaining appropriate quality and profitability standards.
- Review work prepared by managers, seniors, and staff, providing detailed technical feedback and using the review process as an opportunity to develop the technical and professional expertise of team members.
- Provide leadership, direction, and ongoing development to the International Tax team, including establishing goals and priorities, delegating assignments, monitoring performance, coaching personnel, and identifying training and development opportunities.
- Resolve complex tax and engagement issues, exercising sound professional judgment and appropriately escalating significant technical, client, independence, or risk matters when necessary.
- Assist clients with IRS, state, and foreign tax authority examinations and controversy matters, including developing responses, reviewing positions, preparing supporting documentation, and communicating directly with tax authorities as appropriate.
- Monitor developments in U.S. international tax law and regulations, including legislative, regulatory, and administrative changes, and assess their impact on the Firm's clients and service offerings.
- Maintain and reinforce professional and technical standards, including compliance with applicable tax laws, professional standards, the Firm's policies and procedures, independence requirements, and the Firm's Code of Conduct.
- Identify opportunities to improve international tax processes, technology, workflows, and engagement efficiencies, and participate in the implementation of process improvements across the Firm.
- Participate in business development and practice growth initiatives, including developing new client relationships, expanding existing client relationships, participating in proposals and presentations, attending networking and industry events, and identifying opportunities to expand international tax services.
- Collaborate with other tax, accounting, audit, and advisory professionals to provide integrated solutions for clients with domestic and international tax considerations.
- Analyze complex and interconnected tax issues, identifying the relationships between various components of a client's domestic and international tax structure and assessing the overall tax implications.
- Take ownership of complex projects and engagements, ensuring appropriate planning, staffing, budgeting, execution, quality control, and timely completion.
- Effectively manage client expectations and address difficult or sensitive matters, including conflicts or issues involving clients, team members, tax authorities, and other stakeholders.
About You
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance or related field
- Master’s degree in accounting preferred
- CPA or EA Licensed preferred
- Proficiency with tax preparation software and accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, ProSystem, CCH Axcess) a plus
- 10+ years of progressive experience in public accounting, tax consulting, or a related professional services environment, with significant experience in U.S. international taxation.
- At least 5+ years of experience managing and reviewing complex international tax engagements, preferably serving multinational corporations, partnerships, high-net-worth individuals, and other clients with cross-border tax matters.
- Prior supervisory experience preferred, with proven track record of leadership and client relationship management
- Strong financial analysis, research and critical thinking skills as well as strategic planning skills
- Ability to effectively delegate work as needed
- Experience with tax research databases such as BNA and RIA Proficient in all tax compliance process software, CaseWare, Depreciation Software or comparable programs and standard tax workpapers
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and tax preparation/research software; experience with international tax technology and data tools preferred.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, develop, and retain tax professionals at various levels.
