The Financial Analyst Intern will support the Housing Alliance finance team in managing and analyzing financial activities related to public housing programs and community development initiatives. This role provides hands-on experience in government-funded housing operations, including budgeting, grant compliance, and financial reporting, while contributing to efforts that improve affordable housing access.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in preparing and monitoring budgets for public housing programs and grants
- Support analysis of federal, state, and local funding sources (e.g., HUD programs)
- Help prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
- Analyze variances between budgeted and actual expenditures
- Assist with grant tracking, compliance documentation, and reporting requirements
- Support cost allocation and program-level financial analysis
- Conduct research on housing finance policies, funding opportunities, and regulatory updates
- Help maintain financial records and ensure data accuracy in financial systems
- Assist in preparing presentations for leadership, board members, and stakeholders
- Collaborate with program managers to understand operational and financial needs
Required Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Public Administration, or a related field
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including formulas and data analysis tools)
- Basic understanding of financial statements and budgeting principles
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Interest in public service, affordable housing, or community development
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of public sector or nonprofit accounting practices
- Familiarity with HUD funding programs or grant compliance requirements
- Experience with financial systems or ERP software
- Exposure to data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau)
- Coursework or experience in policy analysis or public finance
