Indirect Tax Accountant

Ashley Furniture Industries is seeking an Indirect Tax Accountant to support our U.S. indirect tax function across sales & use tax, property tax, business licenses, exemption certificates, and audit support.

About the Role
As an Indirect Tax Accountant, you'll support Ashley's indirect tax team by preparing workpapers, organizing documentation, reconciling tax data, maintaining trackers, and assisting with audits and notices. You'll work with systems, data, and cross-functional partners to ensure accurate, timely, and audit-ready tax compliance.
You'll also help modernize the tax function by improving documentation, standardizing workpapers, identifying recurring issues, and using approved technology, automation, and analytics tools.
What You'll Do
Sales & Use Tax Support
- Prepare workpapers and reconciliations for sales & use tax filings
- Analyze purchase data to identify taxable purchases (consumer use tax)
- Support exemption certificate collection, validation, and tracking
- Research basic sales & use tax questions and prepare summaries
Property Tax Support
- Gather and organize fixed asset data, assessment notices, and tax bills
- Maintain property tax calendars, deadlines, and status trackers
- Support review of assessments and bills to identify discrepancies or appeal opportunities
- Coordinate with Accounting, Real Estate, and Operations for property-related information
Business Licenses & Registrations
- Support preparation and renewal of business licenses and sales tax registrations
- Maintain registration trackers (account numbers, filing frequencies, renewal dates, jurisdictions)
- Assist with new registrations, account updates, location openings/closures
- Coordinate with Legal, Real Estate, and Operations for jurisdictional filings
Audit & Notice Support
- Gather, organize, and index documentation for audits and tax notices
- Prepare audit support packages (invoices, certificates, reconciliations, sales/purchase data)
- Maintain audit trackers, notice logs, and document request lists
- Draft basic responses to notices for senior tax team review
Data & Process Improvement
- Prepare, clean, organize, and reconcile tax data from multiple sources
- Maintain standardized workpapers, checklists, trackers, and documentation repositories
- Identify manual steps, recurring issues, and process improvement opportunities
- Use approved tax technology, Excel, workflow tools, dashboards, and automation
Business Support
- Respond to routine internal questions about sales tax, property tax, licenses, and certificates
- Work with Accounting, Finance, AP, Procurement, Retail, E-Commerce, and Operations
- Support special projects, research, and business initiatives
What We're Looking For
Education:
- Bachelor's in Accounting, Finance, Business, Tax, or related field preferred (relevant experience considered)
Experience:
- 0–3 years in tax, accounting, finance, accounts payable, audit support, compliance, or business support
Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work with financial data, reconciliations, and spreadsheets
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook
- Ability to follow processes, meet deadlines, and escalate issues appropriately
- Customer service mindset when working with internal partners
Preferred:
- Experience with sales & use tax, property tax, business licenses, exemption certificates, or multi-state compliance
- Experience with ERP systems, tax software, workflow tools, or document repositories
- Accounting, tax, or data analytics coursework or certifications
