Office of Unemployment Insurance Operations

The Office of Unemployment Insurance Operations (OUIO) runs Ohio's unemployment insurance program. This program gives temporary income to workers who lose their jobs through no fault of their own. What You Will Do

This position resides in the Compliance Section within Integrity. This position requires a thorough knowledge of auditing, accounting, Unemployment Insurance (UI) tax laws, and a working knowledge of UI benefits. The role involves:

• Traveling throughout an 8 to 10 county region to review employer payroll and business records for compliance with UI laws and regulations.

• Analyzing multiple sources of information to verify accurate reporting and payment of UI taxes.

• Collecting, organizing, and evaluating data to make well-supported audit decisions.

• Educating employers on UI requirements and best practices.

• Managing multiple assignments simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and meeting strict deadlines. UI auditors must complete a set number of audits each month in addition to other duties, making strong time-management skills essential.

• Working both independently and collaboratively within a team.

• Demonstrating flexibility in a fast paced environment.

• Communication effectively with a wide range of individuals.

• Using a personal computer, calculator, and relevant software to prepare audit reports and worksheets.

Recommended Skills

The position requires a solid understanding of UI tax law, practical knowledge of UI benefits, and a strong foundation in accounting principles and auditing standards. Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is essential.

The ideal candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of the Unemployment Insurance program and the ability to apply UI law to audit scenarios. Successful individuals are detail-oriented, possess strong mathematical and communication skills, and can work effectively both independently and within a team. This person must communicate clearly with the internal and external customers, demonstrate strong self-management, remain flexible, and maintain excellent organizational skills.

Schedule:Full-time 

Hours: Standard workdays are Monday through Friday. Hours are between 8\:00 a.m. and 5\:00 p.m. 

Location\: This position will be headquartered in an ODJFS Facility in one of the following cities - Columbus, Akron, or Dayton. This determination will take into account the proximity to the applicant's home address.

• 12 months experience as an External Auditor 1

Or Option 2:

• 4 years experience in auditing or accounting, which must have included 2 years auditing experience in accordance with auditing standards or in accordance with prescribed management policies &/or procedures as specified on agency position description.

Or Option 3:

• Completion of undergraduate core coursework in accounting, business administration, computer science or related field AND 24 months experience in auditing or accounting which must have included 12 months auditing experience in accordance with auditing standards or in accordance with prescribed management policies &/or procedures as specified on agency position description.

Option 4:

• Equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment noted above.

Pay Information

This position is in the State of Ohio’s OCSEA Pay Schedule, Pay Range 32. Unless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary will be the minimum salary of that pay range (step 1, currently $31.47 per hour). These ranges provide a standardized pathway for pay increases. With continued employment, new hires move to the next step in the range after 6 months and annually thereafter. Cost of Living Adjustments increase wages in these ranges each fiscal year. The current step progression wages are in the table below.
