    Work Year       :   Twelve-month position (260 days)
    Work Week      :   40 hours/week
    Hourly Wage    :   $37.22 - $40.08/HOUR
    GENERAL SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:
    The Accountant performs specialized financial duties for the District within the established accounting policies of the organization and to process and maintain accounting records. He/she provides financial and administrative support in the processing of authorized financial obligations while ensuring timely processing of accounting transactions and related Business Office reporting requirements. The Accountant works with limited supervision while performing all payroll functions for the school district. The Accountant Maintains associated Business Office files. Recommend changes in methods or procedures to improve the efficiency of the Business Office, and performs bookkeeping and clerical work of considerable complexity in the maintenance of payroll records. The Accountant works with considerable independence, making routine work decisions, but new or unusual departures from established procedures are usually referred to the Director of Accounting. Work of the Accountant is subject to automatic and periodic verifications and to review for conformity with regulations and policies.
    RELATIONSHIP WITHIN THE SCHOOL ORGANIZATION:
    The Accountant is supervised in his/her daily functions by the Director of Accounting and evaluated annually by the Director of Accounting.
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
    The Accountant shall:

    • Process and maintain accounting records.
    • Provide financial and administrative support in the processing of authorized financial obligations while ensuring timely processing of accounting transactions and related Business Office reporting requirements.
    • Process payroll data for all school district employees and maintain accurate, up-to-date files of all payroll information including taxes, deductions, union contracts, teachers' retirement and union dues.
    • Enter hourly, salary and daily substitute's time for bi-weekly payrolls.
    • Assemble and validate time and attendance data from all departments and control the input of such data into the school district payroll system.
    • Review employee time cards and/or timesheets for accuracy and completeness and posts hours worked to master payroll.
    • Balance payroll and withholding accounts.
    • Proper reporting to: Internal Revenue Service, FICA and Medicare, Department of Revenue and Teachers' Retirement.
    • Maintain Direct Deposit Electronic Transfers.
    • Prepare required quarterly and annual governmental reports; 941's, W-2's, etc.
    • Distribute payroll deductions in compliance with local, state and federal statutes.
    • Make payments to Department of Labor, IRS, and State of CT Department of Revenue Services.
    • Keeps abreast of collective bargaining contract requirements and restrictions as related to payroll (dates for salary increases, overtime, shift differential and holiday pay restrictions, etc.)
    • Responds to employee inquiries regarding paychecks and payroll practices and procedures.
    • Reviews personnel and/or payroll change notices and posts changes and/or adjustments to master files, e.g. new hires, transfers, reclassifications, terminations and retirements.
    • Work with representatives of government, employee unions and retirement agencies to provide information.
    • Process mortgage verifications and final salary affidavits.
    • Assist with developing and implementing policies and procedures for payroll under the direction of the Director of Accounting.
    • Assist with managing the payroll department record retention schedules.
    • Perform related duties as required.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor's or Associate's Degree with at least five years payroll and financial experience in a school district.
    • Experience in accounting and bookkeeping functions. Knowledge of general accounting and payroll accounts.
    • Experience with financial accounting systems including QuickBooks, ADS and Munis.
    • Excel expertise.

    • Personal computer, Excel, Word and QuickBooks experience.
    • Communicate clearly and courteously, both orally and in writing.
    • Position demands meeting deadlines.
    • Demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness, monitor own work to ensure quality.
    • Meet productivity standards and completes work in a timely manner.
    • Adapt to frequent change in the work environment, manage competing demands, and deal with delays or unexpected events.
    • Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
    • Developing Standards, analyzing information, dealing with complexity, reporting research results, data entry skills, accounting, SFAS rules, attention to detail, and thoroughness.

    •     Regularly required to move from location to another location.
    • Ability to file correspondence ranging in height from 1" to 48" from the floor.
    • Ability to carry, move and put away supplies and equipment weighing up to 10 pounds.
