Job Title: Director, Tax
Reporting to the CFO, the Director, Tax will be responsible for developing and executing the Company’s tax strategy as Eskay Creek proceeds through construction, pre-production and into operation, with a focus on long-term tax optimization. This role will ensure that key structural decisions are tax-efficient, audit-defensible, and aligned with the Company’s financial reporting and business strategy. The successful candidate will participate in structuring new departments, structuring potential acquisitions, and in guiding our tax approach to foundational agreements, including the Company’s recent Impact Benefit Agreement.
The Director will act as the Company’s lead tax authority, partnering closely with the executive leadership team. This role extends beyond compliance and planning into strategic risk management and the development of practical, defensible tax strategies across all aspects of the business, including complex contractual arrangements and Indigenous participation frameworks. This is a hands-on role requiring a leader who is equally comfortable developing strategy and executing detailed tax work, including audit responses, filings oversight, and technical analysis.
Strategic Priorities – First 12 Months
- Lead tax structuring of new lines of business
- Support the tax structuring of Tahltan economic participation
- Develop a life-of-mine tax plan
- Build and scale the tax function, including hiring and developing high-performing talent
- Identify and execute value-creating opportunities, including overseeing the filing of our first (outsourced) SR&ED claim
Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Tax Strategy & Planning
- Develop and implement tax planning strategies to optimize tax efficiency within regulatory requirements
- Provide tax input on the structuring of new projects, investments, and financings
- Advise on tax implications related to agreements with First Nations and participation structures, including lease arrangements and long-term ownership transitions
- Monitor and forecast changes in Canadian tax legislation to assess and predict business impacts
- Advise senior leadership on tax risks and opportunities related to strategic initiatives
Mining-Specific Taxation
- Lead tax matters related to resource taxation, including mining taxes, royalties, and production-based levies
- Oversee tax treatment of exploration, development, and production activities, including:
- Canadian Exploration Expenses (CEE)
- Canadian Development Expenses (CDE)
- Flow-through share financing and related reporting
- Support tax planning related to acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, and project financing
Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Oversee all Canadian federal and provincial income tax compliance, including T2 filings, mineral tax returns, and indirect taxes
- Ensure timely and accurate filing of GST and other indirect taxes
- Manage tax provisions, uncertain tax positions, and other required IFRS tax disclosures
- Review and, where required, support the preparation of key tax analyses, working papers, and audit responses
- Coordinate SR&ED claim applications in collaboration with external advisors
Audit & Risk Management
- Act as primary point of contact for CRA and provincial tax authorities
- Manage tax audits, objections, and settlements
- Work directly with internal systems and financial data to support tax positions and audit requirements
- Identify, assess, and mitigate tax risks across the organization
- Maintain robust internal controls over tax processes
Leadership & Collaboration
- Partner closely with Finance, Operations, and external stakeholders
- Manage relationships with external tax advisors and consultants
- Provide tax guidance and training to non-tax stakeholders
- Contribute to the development of a fit-for-purpose tax function over time, aligned with business complexity and scale
Additional Responsibilities

The Ideal Candidate
Education / Qualifications:
- CPA designation
- Completion of CPA InâDepth Tax Program
Experience / Skills:
- 10+ years of progressive tax experience, including significant exposure to the mining or natural resources sector
- Strong knowledge of Canadian and BC corporate income tax, BC minerals tax, and indirect taxes
- Experience within a public company with Canadian mining operations or within a Big 4 environment strongly preferred
- Expert understanding of Canadian and BC tax legislation as it applies to mining and resource companies
- Strong knowledge of IFRS tax accounting and reporting
- Proven experience managing tax audits and working with tax authorities
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and tax preparation software
- Comfortable operating in a lean environment with a practical, execution-focused approach
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to distill complex tax matters for senior leadership
- Strategic mindset with strong business acumen
- High level of integrity, sound judgment, and attention to detail
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Collaborative leadership style with the ability to influence cross-functional teams
Work Location & Conditions
This is an office-based role at the Skeena Corporate office in Vancouver, British Columbia. Monday to Friday schedule and hybrid can be considered. Additionally, the job is in a fast paced work environment and will have to manage multiple competing priorities. Some flexibility in work location.
Compensation
The expected salary range for this position is CAD $180,000-$220,000, in line with the competitive job market for such roles carried out in British Columbia. Salary ranges are guidelines and any job offer received by a candidate will be determined on a number of factors such as relevant education, training, and/or experience.
